Abstract: This paper describes a range of students' (age 15) expressions of the interplay between causality and variation, which we relate to dimensions of complex causality implicit in mastering the concept of distribution. The results indicate support for our conjecture that it is possible to harness causality in order to help students to invent new ideas of "stochastic causality", a sense of control over random processes through the careful design of a simulation, which places emphasis upon deterministic as well as stochastic behaviour. This result stands apart from mainstream research, which tends to separate the determined and stochastic worlds.
