Abstract: Across western and north western New South Wales, there are dozens of small to medium size towns, many of them including Aboriginal communities as a significant part of their population. In 2012, the authors began working with a national Aboriginal steering committee on a pilot project in one of these towns, Wilcannia. The aim was to investigate whether a mass adult literacy campaign, based on the Cuban Yes, I Can! (or Yo, Si Puedo!) model, could be effective in increasing the rate of adult literacy in these communities (Boughton, Ah Chee, Beetson, Durnan, & LeBlanch, 2013).
