Abstract: Citations form an essential part of research articles (RAs, singular RA) and citation behaviours have attracted considerable attention recently, but little attention has been paid to the use of citations in RAs of different disciplines in the Humanities, much less in Indonesian research articles. Hyland (1999, 2000), for example, suggests that more research should be done on the differences between citation behaviours in different Humanities disciplines. This paper reports the results of a study of citation behaviours in 30 RAs of three Humanities disciplines published in Indonesian accredited academic journals. These disciplines are education, linguistics and social-political sciences. The study concentrates on aspects such as the number of citations used, the purposes of using citations, the role attributed to the writers and authors, attitudes towards the cited information, and the use of reporting structures. The research questions are: How many citations are used in the RAs and for what purposes? Do they highlight or disguise the role of the cited authors? What attitudes do they have towards the cited information? What reporting structures do they use?
