Title: | Improving Mathematics and Science Education in Rural Australia: A Practice Report | Contributor(s): | Whannell, Robert (author) ; Tobias, Stephen (author) | Publication Date: | 2015 | Handle Link: | https://hdl.handle.net/1959.11/17878 | Abstract: | There has been a steady decline in the number of secondary and tertiary students studying mathematics and science. Rural schools also report a shortage of qualified teachers in these disciplines. This paper describes the steps taken at the University of New England (UNE) to improve the provision of mathematics and science education (MS) in rural Australia. Initiatives such as the use of an online interactive digital classroom by rural NSW schools presenting MS contexts based on a SMART (sustainable, management, and accessible rural technologies) Farm will be presented. Research to improve teacher confidence and competence in these areas will be discussed along with the steps being taken to develop a Higher Education Research Facility (HERF) which will support research and engagement in the STEM domain. | Publication Type: | Journal Article | Source of Publication: | Australian and International Journal of Rural Education, 25(2), p. 91-99 | Publisher: | Society for the Provision of Education in Rural Australia (SPERA) | Place of Publication: | Australia | ISSN: | 1839-7387 | Fields of Research (FoR) 2008: | 130399 Specialist Studies in Education not elsewhere classified | Fields of Research (FoR) 2020: | 390499 Specialist studies in education not elsewhere classified | Socio-Economic Objective (SEO) 2008: | 930599 Education and Training Systems not elsewhere classified | Socio-Economic Objective (SEO) 2020: | 169999 Other education and training not elsewhere classified | Peer Reviewed: | Yes | HERDC Category Description: | C1 Refereed Article in a Scholarly Journal |
