Title: | Satisfactory performance by whose measure? The challenges of delivering a professional planning degree in a post-modern world at the University of New England, Armidale | Contributor(s): | McFarland, Paul (author); Bartel, Robyn (author) | Publication Date: | 2012 | Handle Link: | https://hdl.handle.net/1959.11/12066 | Abstract: | University education in post-modern times requires the delivery of courses that are responsive to a variety of political, institutional, market, community and individual expectations. These expectations manifest in a multitude of different forms - economic efficiency, student satisfaction, employability, institutional frameworks. For professional degrees, such as Urban & Regional Planning, there are the added dimensions of course accreditation and employer expectations. Multi-modal forms of education delivery, i.e. a mix of internal and on-line, distance education, greatly increases the complexity. Using the Urban & Regional Planning programmes at the University of New England as a case study, this paper argues that planning courses must maintain a focus on delivering quality outcomes that are focused beyond the immediate metrics used to measure course and unit 'success' and focus on developing forward-thinking students that are capable of delivering outcomes for wider social benefit. | Publication Type: | Conference Publication | Conference Details: | ANZAPS 2012: Australia and New Zealand Association of Planning Schools 2012 Conference, Bendigo, Australia, 21st - 23rd September, 2012 | Source of Publication: | Proceedings of the Australia and New Zealand Association of Planning Schools 2012 Conference, p. 134-141 | Publisher: | La Trobe University | Place of Publication: | Bendigo, Australia | Fields of Research (FoR) 2008: | 120599 Urban and Regional Planning not elsewhere classified | Fields of Research (FoR) 2020: | 330499 Urban and regional planning not elsewhere classified | Socio-Economic Objective (SEO) 2008: | 930201 Pedagogy | Socio-Economic Objective (SEO) 2020: | 160302 Pedagogy | Peer Reviewed: | Yes | HERDC Category Description: | E1 Refereed Scholarly Conference Publication | Publisher/associated links: | http://anzaps.net/2012-conference-bendigo/ |
