Title: | Validation methods for determining heat production by sheep differing in live weight and feed intake | Contributor(s): | Li, Lily (author); Nolan, John V (author) ; Hegarty, Roger (author) | Publication Date: | 2011 | Handle Link: | https://hdl.handle.net/1959.11/11071 | Abstract: | Measurements of heat production (HP) can be used to identify sheep or cattle that use metabolisable energy efficiently for growth. ... We compared estimates of HP derived using the open-circuit respiration chamber, SF6 tracer and the heavy water (D2O) dilution techniques. A range of HP rates was established by using sheep that differed in live weight and feed intake. The aim of this study was to assess the utility of the SF6 tracer method for measuring energy expenditure in large groups of grazing ruminants. | Publication Type: | Conference Publication | Conference Details: | RAAN 2011: 22nd Biennial Recent Advances in Animal Nutrition - Australia Conference, Armidale, Australia, 13th - 15th July, 2011 | Source of Publication: | Recent Advances in Animal Nutrition - Australia, v.18, p. 145-145 | Publisher: | University of New England | Place of Publication: | Armidale, Australia | ISSN: | 0819-4823 | Fields of Research (FoR) 2008: | 070204 Animal Nutrition | Socio-Economic Objective (SEO) 2008: | 830310 Sheep - Meat 830503 Live Animals 830311 Sheep - Wool |
