Abstract:

Herodotus provides very little information about Greek marriage customs, but is interested, along with his AUDIENCE, in the marriage customs of non-Greek peoples (e.g., 1.93.4, 146.3, 196; 2.47.2; 4.117). In connection with the marriage of AGARISTE (I), the daughter of CLEISTHENES OF SICYON, he noted the Athenian custom that marriage followed upon a formal betrothal, and this was the case throughout Greece (6.130.2; see also 3.137.5; 5.32.5, 47.1; 6.65.2).
