Title: | The digital 'gold-rush': the growth of the online trade of anabolic steroids in Belgium and the Netherlands | Contributor(s): | van de Ven, Katinka (author) | Publication Date: | 2016 | Open Access: | Yes | Handle Link: | https://hdl.handle.net/1959.11/31353 | Open Access Link: | https://www.esc-eurocrim.org/index.php/conferences/previous-conferences | Abstract: | Over the past decade there has been an increase in the use of steroids and other human enhancement drugs (HEDs) (e.g., illegal weight-loss drugs, 'smart drugs') across the globe. Specifically, the Internet appears to be playing an important role in facilitating this rising global demand for HEDs: by acting both as a source of information and as a tool for obtaining these substances. Indeed, Internet based sources, such as online 'pharmacies', bodybuilding forums and steroid-selling websites, seem to increasingly be replacing the 'local (gym) vendors' by offering a wide range of HEDs at affordable prices and without a prescription. | Publication Type: | Conference Publication | Conference Details: | EuroCrim 2016: 16th Annual Conference of the European Society of Criminology, Munster, Germany, 21st - 24th September, 2016 | Source of Publication: | EuroCrim 2016: 16th Annual Conference of the European Society of Criminology, Abstracts, p. 83-83 | Publisher: | European Society of Criminology | Place of Publication: | Munster, Germany | Fields of Research (FoR) 2008: | 160504 Crime Policy 160299 Criminology not elsewhere classified |
