Title: | ON-00364: Selecting Sheep for a Resource Limiting Environment | Contributor(s): | Young, John (author); Brown, Daniel (author) ; Ferguson, Mark (author); Masters, David (author); Rose, Gus (author); Swan, Andrew (author) ; Trompf, Jason (author); Walkom, Sam (author) | Publication Date: | 2017 | Publisher: | Australian Wool Innovation Limited | Place of Publication: | Sydney, Australia | Handle Link: | https://hdl.handle.net/1959.11/29177 | Publisher/associated links: | https://www.wool.com/ | Abstract: | In Australia, Merino sheep generally graze and reproduce in extensive grassland systems, characterized by limited feed resources. Under resource limited circumstances, the environment can influence the expression of genes and the health of individuals and constrain ability of individuals and collectives to express genetic progress. Genetic selection has improved productivity of animals represented in the Sheep Genetics database and genetic trends for traits are improving in the stud environment where they are measured. However, on-farm benchmarking data suggests that high index sheep are not necessarily the most profitable when managed in commercial conditions with limited resources. | Publication Type: | Research Report For An External Body - Industry Report | Other Funding Source: | Australian Wool Innovation Limited | Fields of Research (FoR) 2008: | 070201 Animal Breeding | Fields of Research (FoR) 2020: | 300305 Animal reproduction and breeding | Socio-Economic Objective (SEO) 2008: | 830310 Sheep - Meat 830311 Sheep - Wool |
