This result leads to an upper bound on Shannon's information capacity of this imaging method by specifying the maximum number of distinguishable density distributions within the reconstructed volume when the radiation dose delivered to the sample and the spatial resolution are both fixed. If the spatially averaged SNR in the reconstructed electron density is fixed instead, the radiation dose is shown to be proportional to the third or fourth power of the spatial resolution, depending on the sampling of the three-dimensional diffraction space and the scattering power of the sample. | Publication Type: | Journal Article | Source of Publication: | IUCrJ, 5(6), p. 716-726 | Publisher: | International Union of Crystallography (IUCr) | Place of Publication: | United Kingdom | ISSN: | 2052-2525 | Fields of Research (FoR) 2008: | 020599 Optical Physics not elsewhere classified | Fields of Research (FoR) 2020: | 510204 Photonics, optoelectronics and optical communications | Socio-Economic Objective (SEO) 2008: | 970102 Expanding Knowledge in the Physical Sciences | Socio-Economic Objective (SEO) 2020: | 280120 Expanding knowledge in the physical sciences | Peer Reviewed: | Yes | HERDC Category Description: | C1 Refereed Article in a Scholarly Journal |
