Title: | Creating a Teaching Underclass: The Federal Government, the NSW Teachers Federation and the Contracting-out of the Adult Migrant English Service in New South Wales, Australia | Contributor(s): | McQueen, Kelvin (author) | Publication Date: | 2007 | Handle Link: | https://hdl.handle.net/1959.11/2297 | Abstract: | The Adult Migrant English Service (AMES) in New South Wales, Australia, was contracted-out by the Australian Federal government in 1998. This article examines the response of the New South Wales Teachers Federation (the public school teachers' union), as well as the effects of contracting-out on the AMES teaching workforce, and considers the underlying motives of governments engaging in the privatisation of educational services. The conclusion is that governments contract-out to create a 'class' of deunionised and low-paid workers, while largely ignoring private provider efficiency. | Publication Type: | Conference Publication | Conference Details: | Trans Tasman Labour History: Comparative or Transnational?, Auckland, New Zealand, 30th January - 1st February, 2007 | Source of Publication: | Proceedings of the Trans Tasman Labour History Conference, p. 43-50 | Publisher: | Auckland University of Technology, Centre for Work and Labour Market Studies | Place of Publication: | Auckland, New Zealand | Fields of Research (FoR) 2008: | 220202 History and Philosophy of Education | Socio-Economic Objective (SEO) 2008: | 930403 School/Institution Policies and Development | Peer Reviewed: | Yes | HERDC Category Description: | E1 Refereed Scholarly Conference Publication | Publisher/associated links: | http://nla.gov.au/anbd.bib-an41303412 |
