Title: | The effect of cross-fostering on growth differs between piglets of heavy and light birthweights | Contributor(s): | Hermesch, S (author) ; Luxford, B G (author); Graser, H-U (author) | Publication Date: | 2001 | Handle Link: | https://hdl.handle.net/1959.11/10399 | Abstract: | Cross-fostering of piglets at birth has been recommended in order to optimise the rearing capacity of the sow and to standardise piglet weights at weaning (English et al., 1977). However, repeated cross-fostering is often practiced in industry which is stressful for the sow and her piglets resulting in lower weaning weights (Robert and Martineau, 2001). The effect of cross-fostering on piglet growth may differ among piglets with high or low birthweights, which could provide avenues to optimise cross-fostering practices. | Publication Type: | Conference Publication | Conference Details: | APSA 2001: 8th Biennial Conference of the Australasian Pig Science Association, Adelaide, Australia, 25th - 28th November, 2001 | Source of Publication: | Proceedings of the Eighth Biennial Conference of the Australasian Pig Science Association (APSA), p. 73-73 | Publisher: | Australasian Pig Science Association Inc | Place of Publication: | Werribee, Australia | Fields of Research (FoR) 2008: | 070201 Animal Breeding | Socio-Economic Objective (SEO) 2008: | 830308 Pigs | Peer Reviewed: | Yes | HERDC Category Description: | E1 Refereed Scholarly Conference Publication | Publisher/associated links: | http://trove.nla.gov.au/work/24346794 | Series Name: | Manipulating Pig Production | Series Number : | 8 |
