DatasetPublication Access, Equity and Opportunity for Madrassa Students in Higher Education in Pakistan-DatasetEquitable educational access and opportunities are indispensable in creating just societies, particularly developing ones such as Pakistan. This study examines the socio-historical causes and effects of a deeply segregated, class-based primary and secondary education system which has led to Madrassas, religious seminaries, becoming an education system primarily for the poor, thus creating challenges for its graduates in pursuing higher education and in accessing opportunities of social mobility after graduating from Madrassas. Through online surveys of forty-five participants and eight interviews, this ethnographic study brings out the perspectives of Madrassa graduates regarding educational inequities particularly in higher education, the causes of marginalisation of Madrassas and value of Madrassas as an Indigenous knowledge system. The value of Madrassas and the inequities their students experience, are interpreted using the causal theoretical frameworks of post-colonialism, Indigenous knowledge system and structural inequality. The reflective, descriptive, and change-based stories may inform decision makers and contribute to the development of policies which address the intractable social problems experienced by these students falling through the cracks and thus be a step towards exploring a relevant, inclusive, and quality higher education option for this forgotten youth.

Publication Open AccessDatasetAdaptive Learning and Forgetting in an Unconventional Experimental Routine(2018-02-13) ;Kyonka, Elizabeth ;Bell-Garrison, DanielRice, NathanielLearning and forgetting were assessed concurrently in two experiments that involved the same unconventional routine. The schedule of reinforcement changed every session. Sessions were run back-to-back with a 23-hour mid-session break such that in a single visit to the testing chamber, the subject completed the second half of one session and the first half of the next. The beginning of a new session was either signaled or unsignaled. Experiment 1 involved concurrent variable interval-variable interval schedules with four possible reinforcer ratios. Response allocation was sensitive to the richer schedule and was retained through the mid-session break. Experiment 2 involved peak-interval schedules of varying durations. Temporal discrimination was rapidly acquired before and after the mid-session break, but not retained. Signaling the session change decreased control by past contingencies in both experiments, demonstrating that learning and forgetting can be investigated separately. Forgetting is often thought of as the inability to remember, but remembering and forgetting allow behavior to adapt to a changing environment in distinct and separable ways. These results suggest that the temporal structure of information can impact animals’ capacity to forget and remember.3527 881 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings

DatasetPublication Analysis of Congruency Occurring in Policy Development and Implementation Practices to Promote Gender Equity in Pre-Service Teacher Education in Papua New GuineaPapua New Guinea (PNG) has more than 850 distinct languages and over 1000 cultures and is inhabited by many small tribes each with their unique culture, belief systems and practices dominated economically by subsistence agriculture, politically by tribal leaders and Chiefs, and socially by the affairs of kinship groups and allies. The social and cultural diversity and terrain contribute to the rudimentary levels of education and opportunities for males and females in PNG. There is a general consensus that women and girls have low social status and influence. In many cases, they are voiceless and unable to assert their basic rights especially for their freedom of speech and expression. Most of the cultural beliefs and practices have overarching benefits in favor of boys and men rather than girls and women. The harsh economic and social conditions, together with embedded traditionally held cultural attitudes, beliefs and practices, militate against the education, wellbeing and advancement of girls and women.
In order to improve the harsh social and cultural conditions, the Government of PNG (GoPNG), through the National Department of Education (NDOE), introduced the Gender Equity in Education Policy (GEEP) in 2002 and the Gender Equity Strategic Plan (GESP) in 2009. The GEEP calls for curriculum, teaching pedagogies, and instructional language and assessment strategies to promote gender equity for males and females. The main focus of this study was to investigate the extent of congruency between policy development and implementation practices of the GEEP and the GESP to promote gender equity in primary teacher education colleges in PNG. The study was conducted in two primary teachers’ colleges and included officers from the respective divisions at the National Department of Education. One college had many more staff and students from matriarchal societies while the other had almost all staff and students from a patriarchal society. These colleges were selected because of the complex cultural beliefs and practices towards males and females, and the traditional roles of men and women and boys and girls.
The study investigated the understanding of college principals, heads of strand, lecturers, pre-service teachers and NDOE officers regarding gender equity and the adoption and implementation of the GEEP and the GESP. Structured interviews and focus group discussions (FGDs) were used to collect rich data. Braun and Clarke’s (2006) thematic analysis and Fairclough’s (1995) three-dimensional framework were brought together in thematic critical discourse analysis to analyse the structured interviews and focus group discussions. The thematic CDA addressed key concepts in CDA and critical theory such as power, (dis)empowerment, social justice, cultural maintenance, patriarchy, matriarchy, hegemony and agency. This study examined relationships between the attitudes and behaviors of individual participants at both local and national levels, moreover, it explored power relationships and implementation structures and strategies at the macro, meso and micro levels. Thematic CDA was also used to investigate interpersonal relationships between participant groups and to highlight underlying ideologies and discourses.
The study also assessed the experiences, achievements and major challenges faced by the implementers of the GEEP and the GESP. The findings highlighted that the GEEP and the GESP were not developed well to address the existing social and cultural conditions, experiences and context of the people of PNG. The findings also indicated that foreign ideologies and gender principles conflicted with traditional governance structures, belief systems and practices. Dominance, hegemony, suppression, exclusion, leadership, religious beliefs and practices, cultural maintenance and social status were identified as major impediments to the effective adoption and implementation of the GEEP and the GESP. Overall, the findings indicated a lack of congruence between policy development and implementation practices. The promotion of gender equity and implementation of the GEEP and the GESP remain ineffective and need urgent attention from all respective stakeholders.
Recommendations of the study identified the need to establish functional links and structures at local, institutional, national and international levels in pursuit of gender equity. Moreover, the study recommended active political will, proactive leadership, consistent funding, regular mandatory training, communication, social interactions, visitations, monitoring, partnerships and provision of adequate teaching and learning resources.2638 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings

DatasetPublication An Analysis of Students’ Learning in a Mathematics Classroom Where Metacognition is EmphasisedThis study tested the hypothesis that a greater emphasis on teaching practice that incorporates explicit instruction in metacognition and self-regulated learning strategies would result in students having a more positive disposition towards mathematics and a mastery-orientation towards learning. Bandura’s social cognitive theory and Zimmerman’s work on self-regulated learning provided a conceptual framework for examining affective variables including motivation, engagement, persistence, and beliefs. Data were collected from Year 9 mathematics students through both qualitative and quantitative methodologies, including surveys, interviews and observations and analysed through coding and Rasch analysis. Findings included the robustness of metacognition and susceptibility of self-efficacy to short-term influences.603 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Publication Open AccessDatasetThe anatomy of a crushing bite: the specialised cranial mechanics of a giant extinct kangarooThe Sthenurinae were a diverse subfamily of short-faced kangaroos that arose in the Miocene and diversified during the Pliocene and Pleistocene. Many species possessed skull morphologies that were relatively structurally reinforced with bone, suggesting that they were adapted to incorporate particularly resistant foods into their diets. However, the functional roles of many unique, robust features of the sthenurine cranium are not yet clearly defined. Here, the finite element method is applied to conduct a comprehensive analysis of unilateral biting along the cheek tooth battery of a well-represented sthenurine, Simosthenurus occidentalis. The results are compared with those of an extant species considered to be of most similar ecology and cranial proportions to this species, the koala (Phascolarctos cinereus). The simulations reveal that the cranium of S. occidentalis could produce and withstand comparatively high forces during unilateral biting. Its greatly expanded zygomatic arches potentially housed enlarged zygomaticomandibularis muscles, shown here to reduce the risk of dislocation of the temporomandibular joint during biting with the rear of a broad, extensive cheek tooth row. This may also be a function of the zygomaticomandibularis in the giant panda (Ailuropoda melanoleuca), another species known to exhibit an enlarged zygomatic arch and hypertrophy of this muscle. Furthermore, the expanded frontal plates of the S. occidentalis cranium form broad arches of bone with the braincase and deepened maxillae that each extend from the anterior tooth rows to their opposing jaw joints. These arches are demonstrated here to be a key feature in resisting high torsional forces during unilateral premolar biting on large, resistant food items. This supports the notion that S. occidentalis fed thick, lignified vegetation directly to the cheek teeth in a similar manner to that described for the giant panda when crushing mature bamboo culms.4114 1189 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings

Publication Open AccessDatasetAnticipatory Traumatic Reaction and Compassion Fatigue (Thesis Study 4)(2018-02-22); ; ; This study investigated the relationship and interactions between compassion fatigue and anticipatory traumatic reaction (ATR), both conditions arising from secondary exposure to trauma. Compassion fatigue, which often occurs for caring professionals, involves symptoms of secondary traumatic stress and job burnout. ATR is a future-focused form of distress arising from media reports and social discussions of large-scale negative events and threats. A cohort of 48 youth workers from a not-for-profit company located in the New England region completed measures of secondary traumatic stress, burnout, compassion satisfaction, general distress, and anticipatory traumatic reaction. Surveys were completed via the online Qualtrics platform. Results showed that ATR magnified the relationship between secondary traumatic stress and general distress. Moderated mediation analyses indicated that anticipatory traumatic reaction interacted with general distress in connecting secondary traumatic stress with burnout. High levels of ATR may exacerbate distress, potentially putting care workers at greater risk of burnout.1204 187 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Publication Open AccessDatasetAnticipatory Traumatic Reaction: Risks and Interventions (Thesis Study 6)(2018-02-22); ; ; An online experiment assessed the effectiveness of interventions intended to mitigate anticipatory traumatic reaction, a form of future-focused distress occurring in response to threat-related media reports and discussions. A stratified sample of 512 Australian adults (recruited via online Qualtrics panels) completed measures of anticipatory traumatic reaction, positive and negative affect, empathy, intolerance of uncertainty, and repetitive negative thinking. Participants then viewed a stimulus video containing a series of terrorism and crime reports, and were randomly assigned to one of seven conditions. The conditions consisted of six brief online interventions, based on standard psychological treatments for anxiety and mood disorders, and one control condition. Risk factors for experiencing higher levels of general anticipatory traumatic reaction included being female, being younger, living with a mental illness, repetitive negative thinking, intolerance of uncertainty, personal distress empathy, fantasy empathy, and a concern about world politics. A cognitive intervention to address probability neglect and a mindfulness intervention both significantly attenuated momentary anticipatory traumatic reaction. This research provides a platform for better understanding the phenomenon of anticipatory traumatic reaction and reducing levels of distress for affected individuals.1215 195 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Publication Open AccessDatasetAnticipatory Traumatic Reaction: Scale Construction and Validation (Thesis Studies 2 and 3)(2018-02-22); ; ; Two studies, with a total of 707 participants (recruited via a Qualtrics online survey), developed and examined the reliability and validity of a measure for Anticipatory Traumatic Reaction (ATR), a novel construct describing a form of distress that may occur in response to threat-related media reports and discussions. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis resulted in a scale comprising three subscales: feelings related to future threat; preparatory thoughts and actions; and disruption to daily activities. Internal consistency was 0.93 for the overall ATR scale. The ATR scale demonstrated convergent validity through associations with negative affect, depression, anxiety, stress, neuroticism, and repetitive negative thinking. The scale showed discriminant validity in relationships to Big Five characteristics. The ATR scale had some overlap with a measure of post-traumatic stress disorder, but also showed substantial separate variance. The ATR scale will allow researchers to further investigate anticipatory traumatic reaction in the fields of trauma, clinical practice, and social psychology.1272 261 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings

DatasetPublication Applying behavioural strategies to promote household water-conservation strategies(2018-06-25) ;Addo, Isaac ;Thoms, Martin ;Parsons, Melissa ;Parsons, MelissaThoms, MartinWater is an essential resource to society. Conserving water is an intrinsic part of human behaviour. Traditional water conservation approaches typically adopt command-and-control strategies that are restrictive, and do not always achieve long term sustainable water conservation. Understanding the causal mechanisms of behaviour that result in changes to an individual’s attitudes, desires, and motivations offers an alternative approach to conserving water. The nature of sustainable water conservation is revealed in three behavioural mechanisms: capability - the capacity to engage in conservation activities; opportunity - external conditions that enable behaviour to occur; and, motivation -internal factors that energise or direct behaviour.2336 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings

Publication Open AccessDatasetThe Association Between Gratitude and Depression: A Meta-AnalysisThis is the meta-analysis data set for the following manuscript: This meta-analysis evaluated the association between gratitude and depression. The study synthesized the association in 70 reported effect sizes from 62 published and unpublished articles, involving a total of 26,427 child, adolescent, and adult participants. The studies were completed by different research teams, using different samples, different measures, and various correlational research designs. The results showed a significant association between gratitude and depression, r = -.39 [95% confidence intervals - .44, - .34], indicating that individuals who experience more gratitude have lower levels of depression. The results did not vary significantly with the measure of gratitude or depression used, whether the study was longitudinal or cross-sectional, the age of participants or the percentage of female participants, suggesting a robust connection between higher levels of gratitude with lower levels of depression. The findings provide a reason to explore the effects of gratitude-focused interventions as a method to alleviate depression and to prevent the development of depression.2715 406 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
DatasetPublication The Association between the Five-Factor Model of Personality and Problem Cannabis Use: A Meta-AnalysisThis a datafile for a meta-analysis. The aim of this meta-analysis was to examine the association between the five-factor model of personality and problem cannabis use. Only studies using reliable and valid measures of the variables were included. The meta-analysis included eight separate samples from five different studies and a total of 5,334 participants. The results of the meta-analysis indicate that four of the traits in the five-factor model of personality traits had a significant association with problem cannabis use: neuroticism (r = .33, p = <.05, 95% CI [.01,.59], conscientiousness (r = -.29, p = <.01, 95% CI [-.46,-.10], agreeableness (r = -.29, p = <.05, 95% CI [.01,.59], and openness (r = .18, p = <.05, 95% CI [.03,.32]. The results suggest that individuals who use cannabis to a problematic extent share a common personality profile that differentiates problematic cannabis use from other forms of addictive behaviours due to the present finding of a positive association with openness to experience. The findings of this meta-analysis support the value of the five-factor model of personality and may point to the development of new prevention and treatment strategies1486 1 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
DatasetPublication Association between the five-factor model of personality and problem gambling: A meta-analysisThis meta-analysis examined the associations between the five-factor personality model traits and problem gambling. To be eligible for inclusion in the meta-analysis, studies had to provide effect size data that quantified the magnitude of the association between all five personality traits and problem gambling. Studies also had to use psychometrically sound measures. The meta-analysis included 20 separate samples from 19 studies and 32,222 total participants. Results showed that problem gambling was significantly correlated with the five-factor model of personality. The strongest personality correlate of problem gambling was neuroticism r = 0.31, p = <.001, 95% CI [.17, .44], followed by conscientiousness r = -.28, p = <.001, 95% CI [-.38,-.17] ), agreeableness r = -.22, p = <.001, 95% CI [-.34, -.10], openness r = -.17, p = <.001, 95% CI [-.22,-.12], and extraversion r = - .11, p =.024, 95% CI [-.20,-.01]. These results suggest problem gamblers tend to share a common personality profile – one that could provide clues as to the most effective ways to prevent and to treat problem gambling.2015 1 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
