This third edition of Ancient Greece has been expanded in its historical range down to the death of Alexander III 'the Great' of Macedon, and so has a new title: Ancient Greece: Social and Historical Documents from Archaic Times to the Death of Alexander the Great. Over the last ten years since the second edition of Ancient Greece, the authors have become convinced that it was necessary to give a fuller historical treatment of ancient Greece so that users of the book could learn what happened in Greece in the fourth century BC. This also means that the social history chapters could contain documents from this century, giving a fuller indication of what ancient Greek society was like. In addition, we feel that there is a need for a textbook, appearing in conjunction with this third edition, which will give the full background to the texts translated in Ancient Greece. This textbook, The Ancient Greeks: History and Culture from Archaic Times to the Death of Alexander, has the same chapter titles as Ancient Greece, and will provide students with the necessary background knowledge and details for understanding each historical period and social aspect of ancient Greece. Accordingly, many of the extensive comments accompanying individual documents have been reduced in scope and size in Ancient Greece itself. What we aim to give in this edition is enough commentary on each document to make it comprehensible, with the overall background to be given in the textbook. Our teaching from Ancient Greece over the last fifteen years has also taught us that less is often more. We have tried to give the necessary background for each document but have not tried to 'overload' the students with information. As first-year undergraduates tend not to follow up the detailed references to modern authors given with the documents in the first and second editions, these have been taken out and replaced with a shorter more useable selection of reading for each chapter, to be found in the Bibliography.

The city of Rome, halfway down the western coast of Italy and some 15 kilometres inland, started its history as a few primitive huts on adjacent hills; the earliest archaeological remains belong to the foundations of dwellings on the Palatine dating to the middle of the eighth century BC. The city would eventually be built over and around the famous seven hills: the Aventine, Caelian, Capitoline, Esquiline, Palatine, Quirinal and Viminal. Tradition and myth gave the city a founder, Romulus, but nearly everything about him is probably fictitious. For the Romans, he was the first of seven kings, before the Republic came into being in 509 BC with the overthrow of the last king, the Etruscan Tarquinius Superbus 'the Proud'. Livy and Dionysius record much about these seven kings, who ruled over some 250 years, but the pre-regal and regal history of Rome is more or less lost except for the archaeological record.

The entire contents of the Pali Sutta-Pitaka have long been available in English translation, but the corresponding contents of the Chinese Buddhist canon remain, for the most part, inaccessible to the English-reading public. A project is under way that may eventually see the Chinese āgamas translated, in their entirety, into English. In the meantime, however, interested readers who are not literate in Chinese have to rely on the still very small number of translations of individual sutras being produced by a few dedicated monks and scholars. The present book makes a substantial contribution to that process, by presenting thirteen significant sutras from the Chinese canon, with Chinese text and English translation conveniently set out in parallel columns.

This second edition of 'Australian Legal Institutions: Principles, Structure and Organisation' aims to build on the objectives set out in the preface to the first edition. Since that first edition in 1996, the world in general, and the Australian legal scene in particular, has changed to a great extent. For example, we hear constant talk of globalisation and of the increasingly comparative nature of Australia's legal system in which Australian law is calibrated against the law of other countries. This has resulted, for example, in some justices of the High Court being more willing to look at developments. This comparative approach is also evident in other countries where, for example, the United Kingdom House of Lords in 'Arthur J S Hall & Co' [2000] 3 WLR 543 reviewed a broad sweep of national approaches (including Australia's) on the issue of the immunity of barristers for their work against claims of negligence. This issue is discussed in Chapter 12. There has also been the continuing evolution of "the Australian common law" in the wake of the 'Mabo case' of 1992. In terms of legal education, we have had the Australian Law Reform Commission's Report No 89, 'Managing Justice', which discusses the fact that legal education needs to focus more on "what lawyers do" rather than simply on "what the law is". We have also seen the advancing of the technological revolution and of the internet, which has fundamentally changed the way we communicate with one another via email, mobile phones and so on. For lawyers it has also revolutionised legal research techniques by providing access to a vast array of materials via websites such as Austlii. At the same time as these developments have taken place, the essential fabric and shape of Australia's legal institutions have remained the same.

The opinion of Australia's women convicts has veered from criminal whore to helpless victim. They have been vilified, lionised, statisticised and generalised, but no one has yet asked: What were they like as human beings? Were they strong or weak, helpless or manipulative? Were they proud and scornful or meek and downtrodden? What were their morals - promiscuous or monogamous - and were these by fate or choice? Did they have a sense of family and love their men, their children, their parents? Did they hope for the future, or long for the past? Was transportation for them 'the fatal shore' or a chance for a better life in a new land? Some answers can be found when one group of female prisoners is considered in the detail of its individual lives. As the social stability of the eighteenth century rolled inexorably into the convulsions of the nineteenth, 100 female children were born at scattered locations of the British Isles. This is the story of those women, whom fate linked by their transportation to New South Wales in 1829. Gathered in from the length and breadth of England, they huddled together for six months on the small tossing ship the Princess Royal, to be unloaded and dispersed again across the wide, open spaces of a strange land. Among their number was a dark-haired, hazel-eyed woman from Nottingham. Her name was Susannah Watson.

I first came across Lucy Gray in the John Oxley section of the State Library of Queensland. She was resting quietly amongst the 'Lucy Gray Papers', in a file formally identified as JOL OM7S-123. Although her physical self was cleverly disguised in the form of a handwritten journal and diary, nevertheless a strong indomitable spirit lingered there, her presence almost tangible in the clear precise handwriting and the little sketches and drawings. The journal, commencing in 1868, was to provide me with valuable information for a study into women's colonial writing that I was undertaking for a Doctorate. However, with my project complete, Lucy continued to invade my thoughts. From the margins of the journal she whispered encouragement, inviting me to take a closer look at a woman who, in spite of her provocative journal, threatened to conceal many of her secrets behind Victorian protocol and female anonymity.

No one can deny that the phenomenon of 'social movements' of the post-World War II era created a unique constellation in human history. The movements of the 1950s and 1960s, which we now consider 'classical' movements, were followed at once by yet another set of movements of the 1970s and 1980s, of which the women's movements are a part. Not only were these 'new' movements numerous but they often were of a similar kind. This raises questions about the political culture, the social, economic and moral norms of the societies in which they occurred. Some writers of the 1970s and 1980s have begun to consider the implications of these but much remains to be done and written on the subject. This book deals extensively and exclusively with the women's movements of western Europe. It probes their history and context, their strategies, structures and their culture. The questions that were of particular interest to me were concerned with the possibilities and limits of protest. What were the claims women made? How did they go about getting heard? Did governments take note of their stated aims and needs? What was the role of governments? Did they initiate reform, or did they do so only as a result of the mobilisation of dissent? And if governments undertook reforms, have they made a difference in everyday life for women? Is the very notion of formal equality being translated into practice? What do the statistics describing the social status of women tell us? How do these observations connect with the more elusive issues of a new consciousness and perhaps a new identity for women?

Students in primary and secondary school use language as a resource for learning. Students also use language to display what they have learned in order for their progress and achievement at school to be assessed. As students progress through the school years, in all areas of the curriculum, the language and literacy demands placed on them increase and this has implications for literacy and learning. This book presents teachers with an approach for talking about language with students to help them expand the meanings they can make, in other words, to expand their language repertoire. The book encourages teachers to think about language as a system of resources used to make meanings in order to achieve social goals. If we think about language as a resource for making meaning, knowledge about language can be thought of as a 'toolkit' we can use to make our meanings increasingly effective. This third edition of Grammar and meaning considers how the Language, Literature and Literacy strands of the Australian Curriculum: English can be interwoven effectively by using metalanguage as a 'toolkit' to explore and enhance the interpretation and composition of texts across the curriculum. This approach allows students to talk and think systematically about the meanings language makes, as well as the forms and structures used to make those meanings.

The book contains grammar summaries, exercises and reflections to introduce relevant functions and forms of grammar. This is followed by a focus on language patterns in whole texts. This whole-text work is organised into two distinct sections (Foundation–Year 3 and Years 4–6) to make closer connections with language patterns and uses of language. The targeted learning activities and classroom notes in these sections support deepening knowledge about how language is used at different stages of learning, and provide models of how to apply that knowledge to select and prepared texts and activities to integrate language, literacy and literature in the classroom.

The first edition of this book was written when the original authors, Michael Eburn and Robert Hayes, were teaching criminal law at the University of New England (UNE) in Armidale, NSW. It was designed to fill a gap by providing a text for a one semester course that covered the subjects necessary to meet the learning objectives for criminal law prescribed by the Legal Profession Admission Rules. A book designed for that purpose cannot, and does not, aim to cover the entire range of criminal offences, nor does it aim to provide a critical analysis of the criminal law. It was intended to assist students, early in their legal career, to identify the law and to understand how the statutes that are passed by parliament are supplemented and interpreted by the courts. That was our intention when we wrote the first edition and it remains our intention today. A most significant change between the third edition and the present edition has been a change in authors. Sadly Robert Hayes died in 2011. Robert was an inspirational teacher and keen advocate for the less advantaged in society. When he left UNE he took up a position at the University of Western Sydney (UWS) where he continued to inspire his students and motivate them to achieve. Part of the proceeds from the sale of this book will go to the Robert Hayes Memorial Scholarship for Law that is available to support third or fourth year law students at UWS who have demonstrated a passion for and commitment to the law and who can demonstrate financial or other hardship or who are the first in their family to attend university. Two new authors have come on board for the fourth edition: the Honourable Roderick Howie, a former judge of the NSW Supreme Court, and Paul Sattler, solicitor and lecturer in law at the UNE. Rod, who is also a co-editor, with Peter Johnson, of Howie and Johnson's 'Annotated Criminal Legislation of NSW' (LexisNexis) and editor of the LexisNexis service, 'Criminal Practice and Procedure' NSW, brings to the work an encyclopaedic knowledge of the criminal law which has informed the entire work. Paul brings both practical and academic experience and maintains the book's links to the UNE. Michael Eburn remains a contributing author, though he has now moved from the UNE to the Australian National University in Canberra. The book remains true to its original philosophy, providing a careful analysis of the legislation and case law that define the chosen criminal offences in New South Wales as well as the provisions that govern criminal procedure. It states the law as at May 2013.

This second edition of 'Health and Physical Education: Preparing educators for the future' retains all of its excellent features from the first edition and in many places strengthens these features. Callcott, Miller and Wilson-Gahan provide updated examples of the uses of ICT in health and physical education, further strengthening the alignment of these fields. The developmental perspective that underpins the book is highlighted by increasing the focus on the crucially important topic of early childhood pedagogy and curriculum. They strengthen an already outstanding feature of the book, of speaking directly to the student-teacher reader, by updating the literature on the use of vignettes and teacher biography in teacher education. The whole area of health education is substantially further developed with the inclusion of the concept of salutogenesis and of the emerging strengths-based approach to health education. The purpose of this book is to focus on a wide range of concepts and procedures which are available for analysing quantitative research data. These concepts and procedures are collectively considered to constitute the domain of statistics. It is an inescapable fact that in order to either read or conduct good business, behavioural and social science research, you must become acquainted with how such data are analysed. • Quantitative data necessarily require the application of specific statistical formulas, analytical sequences and computations which transform and condense raw numerical data (e.g. people's marks on a survey questionnaire or readings from an instrument) into forms that can be interpreted as telling particular stories or as supporting or not supporting a particular research question, hypothesis or prediction. • Qualitative data on the other hand, confront the researcher in non-numerical (often textual) form and this necessitates quite different analytical approaches to extracting meaning from the data and generating appropriate interpretations. However, in some circumstances, it may be appropriate to transform qualitative data into quantitative form, which means that there may be instances where qualitative research data can be usefully analysed using quantitative methods. This book should prove very useful to the reader in either case.
