Most specimens have been fixed in FAA or FPA or ethanol. Most specimens are held in 70% ethanol. Specimens are generally available for both non-destructive and destructive sampling for taxonomic and other systematic botanical studies. In a few cases, the spirit material represents the primary material of the gathering. Much of the spirit collection is focused on research active groups such as Cyperaceae, Phyllanthaceae and Cucurbitaceae. Work is currently underway to update the N.C.W. Beadle Herbarium spirit collection database. However, it is estimated that this collection includes approximately 1,400 plant specimens, of which nearly all were collected in Australia.
