Abstract: 

An overview of the membership and activities of the Maitland Scientific (and Historical Research) Society that was active between 1887 and 1918. The Society was a precursor to today's history and heritage organisations in Maitland NSW. It was indicative of the burst of interest in science and history that characterised a number of local communities in late 19th and early 20th century Australia and beyond.
