Abstract:

Quick UDP Internet Connections (QUIC) is a recently introduced transport layer protocol, which speeds up the process of transferring data over an IP network. QUIC combines the best features of UDP and TCP to deliver data with smaller delays and reduced overhead. While QUIC is faster than the legacy connection-oriented protocols like TCP, it cannot match the speed of UDP, and hence cannot effectively support the transmission of delay-sensitive data. This paper presents a modified version of QUIC, which provides services to time-sensitive applications such as those requiring real-time traffic exchange, especially in unreliable environments. We perform experiments in static and mobile settings to evaluate and compare the performance of the so-called unreliable QUIC (uQUIC) protocol that has been proposed in this paper. Our analysis shows that the proposed uQUIC protocol incurs considerably lower time delay as compared to the legacy QUIC protocol.
