Abstract:

Anne McMahon’s Floating Prisons: Irish Convict Hulks and Voyages to New South Wales follows her short, self-published 2011 monograph on the voyages of Irish convict ships to Van Diemen’s Land after 1840. The current work, handsomely packaged by Halstead Press, supplements the former, although it is more ambitious and expansive, tracing the earlier history of Irish convict administration and the voyages of sixty-one convict ships to New South Wales between 1823 and 1837.
