dc.description.abstract
It is September 1944. Royal Air Force (RAF) pilot, Sergeant Peter J. Clark, flying Supermarine Spitfire Mk. IX serial number MJ116, is just one member of No. 73 Squadron, RAF, to take part in an attack on the Ljubljana airfield and the Zalog-Ljublana railway. Sergeant Clark's Spitfire was shot down by German air defences and crashed in Ljubljana.

In August and October 2019, the wreck of Spitfire MJ116 was excavated by the Archaeological Research Consortium on behalf of the Ljubljana Museum and Galleries. This book presents the results of the historical research and archaeological investigation that was compiled during the project. The editor has described the project as 'the first systematic excavation of this particular type of 20th century military remains in the Republic of Slovenia'. Although this book presents the results of an archaeological project related to one individual aircraft and pilot, they are representative of the larger air war that was fought in the area during the Second World War.
en
