Abstract: The increasing ability to genetically modify crops and other organisms, and the polarization of public opinion on the desirability of introducing these genetically modified organisms ('GMOs') into the environment, presents significant legal challenges. Broadly, these challenges relate to the regulatory procedures in place to authorize the release of GMOs into the environment, and to the liability regime that governs damage caused by the deliberate release of GMOs.
