This article focuses on the character of Maribas, who is mentioned twice in ‘Depart pour le sabbat’, the ninth poem of the ‘Ecole flamande’, where he joins the magicians by flying away on a saucepan handle. Building on E. J. Kent’s pioneering work on male witchcraft, our aim is to explore the subversive value of Maribas’s inclusion in the collection, by contextualizing this figure within the cultural, social (and gendered) histories of the male witch and his related traditional features.en
