The significance of environmental and socio-economic issues in research management planning

Abstract

In recent decades, climate change, the destruction of natural habitats and resources, and increased inequality among and within nations, have become the focus of intense debate among policy makers, business groups, international organisations, non-governmental organisations and the research community. The establishment of new global governance norms in an increasingly denationalised world has also impacted on policy decisions on these issues. Most people would argue that states and policy makers should incorporate commonly accepted environmental and socio-economic norms in research management policy making. Moreover, these should form an important component of the agenda setting out the development process for disadvantaged groups, particularly women, and ensuring environmental sustainability. The task is a complex one, and entails decisions that would promote development and the reduction of poverty and bring sustainable benefits to the widest number of people. The major challenge then is to manage the process of change in a just and equitable manner, while at the same time adhering to core environmental standards and ensuring environmental sustainability.
