The paper argues that the established distinction between long range combat (missile combat) and close range combat cannot be applied to Homeric and Archaic combat; that, in contrast, both types are part of the same close range fighting. However, the idea that missile combat is qua distance distinct from close combat, is embedded in a long tradition, which can be traced back to those scholars who commented on the Homeric text in the Hellenistic epoch.en
