This paper addresses the lack of emphasis on Southeast Asia in Anglocentric ecocritical scholarship. Despite the rich environmental traditions of Southeast Asian literature, few studies in English have been published. In order for ecocriticism to grow in Southeast Asia, scholars within the region should become knowledgeable of the practical possibilities of ecocriticism that could benefit their local communities. In embracing possibilities for activism and engagement, as well as a transnational outlook, ecocriticism will achieve greater relevance to human and nonhuman communities in Southeast Asia and elsewhere. Given the extraordinary pressures on environments throughout Asia, and especially in the Southeast region, community-based ecocritical scholarship is urgent.en
