Developed and validated in Nigeria, the Socio-Cultural Environmental Scale (SCES) has been used in numerous studies and in a range of cultural contexts over the past decade. This paper reports the authors' experience when employing two of the five subscales of SCES in the South Pacific, where the results were unexpected. Questions are raised about the validity and reliability of SCES, and researchers are cautioned about using the instrument uncritically.en
