Abstract: The Lex Oppia, passed in 215 BCE and repealed in 195 BCE, prohibited women from using more than half an ounce of gold, purple-dyed clothing, or carriages except during public religious festivals. The law has become a focal point in discussions of Roman luxury and women's rights.
