Title: | Australian Aboriginal peoples and giftedness: A diverse issue in need of a diverse response | Contributor(s): | Thraves, Genevieve (author)![]() ![]() |
Publication Date: | 2017 | Handle Link: | https://hdl.handle.net/1959.11/21301 | Abstract: | For over thirty years sporadic research has attempted to address the underrepresentation of Aboriginal students in gifted programs. What emerges from the literature is the need for cultural understanding, flexibility and sensitivity when dealing with definitional issues of giftedness, and cultural inclusivity when designing talent development programs that respond to the particular needs of gifted learners from Aboriginal backgrounds. This article will explore these issues and highlight the need for schools to value the funds of knowledge Aboriginal students bring to their classrooms, which in turn will allow for more appropriate identification protocols and programs to be put in place for these students. | Publication Type: | Journal Article | Source of Publication: | TalentEd, v.29, p. 18-31 | Publisher: | University of New England, School of Education | Place of Publication: | Australia | ISSN: | 0815-8150 | Fields of Research (FoR) 2008: | 130202 Curriculum and Pedagogy Theory and Development | Fields of Research (FoR) 2020: | 390102 Curriculum and pedagogy theory and development | Socio-Economic Objective (SEO) 2008: | 939901 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education | Socio-Economic Objective (SEO) 2020: | 210201 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander education engagement and attendance outcomes | Peer Reviewed: | Yes | HERDC Category Description: | C1 Refereed Article in a Scholarly Journal | Publisher/associated links: | http://www.talented.org.au/australian-aboriginal-peoples-and-giftedness-a-diverse-issue-in-need-of-a-diverse-response/ |
