Title: | First Report of Gout in an Ornithomimid (Dinosauria: Theropoda) from the Horseshoe Canyon Formation, Alberta | Contributor(s): | Bell, Phil (author) ; Rothschild, Bruce M (author); Tanke, Darren H (author) | Publication Date: | 2011 | Handle Link: | https://hdl.handle.net/1959.11/14852 | Abstract: | A spherical lesion on a pedal phalanx of an ornithomimid from the Scollard Formation of Alberta is diagnosed as gout. Gout is recognized in the absence of urate crystals by the presence of periarticular spherical lesions and smooth perilesional bone growth forming a characteristic overhanging "lip." This finding identifies gout in the Ornithomimosauria for the first time, confirming gout was present in theropods outside of the Tyrannosauridae. | Publication Type: | Journal Article | Source of Publication: | New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science Bulletin, v.53, p. 166-168 | Publisher: | New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science | Place of Publication: | United States of America | ISSN: | 1524-4156 | Fields of Research (FoR) 2008: | 060399 Evolutionary Biology not elsewhere classified 040308 Palaeontology (incl Palynology) 060301 Animal Systematics and Taxonomy |
