Additional language learning is an essential requirement for today's learners in a globalised world. English as an additional language presents many challenges, as a complex and culturally diverse global language. Engaging learners in both the desire to learn English and in recognizing its advantages for themselves in their local lives requires careful attention to the contexts of learning, the specific interests of the learners, the texts and linguistic concepts explored and on the relationship teachers of English can establish with their learners. This paper draws on the literature addressing plurilingual learning contexts, and particularly intercultural language learning and the use of authentic, context and place-specific texts to promote engagement, enjoyment and achievement in learners of English. Drawing on work from around the globe, examples of essential considerations in developing intercultural English programs, use of local texts and technologies, and making English learning relevant to each set of learners are used to suggest that deeper connections with the lives and places of the learners is one way forward in addressing the challenges of motivating learners to in studying English.en
