Title: | Emergence and persistence of barnyard grass ('Echinochloa colona' (L.) Link) and its management options in sorghum | Contributor(s): | Wu, H (author); Walker, S (author); Osten, V (author); Taylor, I (author); Sindel, Brian Mark (author) | Publication Date: | 2004 | Handle Link: | https://hdl.handle.net/1959.11/11525 | Abstract: | A general trend of decreasing emergence of barnyard grass ('Echinochloa colona' (L.) Link with increasing soil burial depth was found in this study. Barnyard grass emerged primarily at the soil surface (0-2 cm), while little emergence was found at the burial depth of 10 cm. Three major flushes of emergence were identified during late spring and early summer. Seed persistence decreased rapidly with increasing burial depths and duration. Research showed that wider sorghum row spacings resulted in higher weed biomass. Soil incorporation of atrazine mixed with metolachlor at sorghum planting provided effective seasonal control of barnyard grass. Further studies on barnyard grass biology and integrated weed management strategies are necessary in improving control efficacy and in reducing the risk of developing herbicide resistance. | Publication Type: | Conference Publication | Conference Details: | 14AWC: 14th Australian Weeds Conference, Wagga Wagga, Australia, 6th - 9th September, 2004 | Source of Publication: | 14th Australian Weeds Conference Papers and Proceedings: Weed Management - Balancing People, Planet, Profit, p. 538-541 | Publisher: | Weed Society of New South Wales | Place of Publication: | Wahroonga, Australia | Fields of Research (FoR) 2008: | 070308 Crop and Pasture Protection (Pests, Diseases and Weeds) | Socio-Economic Objective (SEO) 2008: | 820507 Wheat | Peer Reviewed: | Yes | HERDC Category Description: | E1 Refereed Scholarly Conference Publication | Publisher/associated links: | http://www.caws.org.au/awc/2004/awc200415381.pdf |
