BookPublication The 1913 Rome Lectures: First International Training Course, by Maria Montessori(Montessori-Pierson Publishing Company, 2013); ;Quade, Larry ;Montessori, CarolinaVerheul, JokeIt is 2013 and the ideas of Maria Montessori on human development have spread far and wide around the world. The name is universally known in education circles and beyond, and there are countless schools that claim her name and method. Over a century of growth and expansion - with Montessori's philosophy resonating with many - millions of children have had the opportunity to be introduced to education via Montessori environments. Today Montessori is present in a vast number of countries, where it continues to grow exponentially and is increasingly being embraced as a tool for life - in order that our children may be better equipped to develop their potential. We saw a similar transformational movement one hundred years ago, when Maria Montessori was on the brink of major international success: with the English translation of her book The Montessori Method appearing the previous year, 1913 was to become the year in which the appeal of her innovative ideas would consolidate: she would give her first international teacher training course, and prepare for a promotional tour to the USA.3069 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
BookPublication 2012 AGBU Pig Genetics Workshop Notes(University of New England, Animal Genetics and Breeding Unit, 2012); Contains the edited conference papers presented at the Animal Genetics and Breeding Unit Pig Genetics (AGBU) Workshop, held at the University of New England, Armidale, Australia on the 24th and 25th of October, 2012. Following the tradition of previous workshops, research results relevant to animal breeding and pork production were discussed. Both Prof Hans Graser and Prof Chris Moran agreed to provide an overview of the application of quantitative and molecular genetics to livestock industries and beyond. Dr Andrew Swan outlined how genomic selection has been implemented in genetic evaluation systems used in the sheep and beef industries. Further topics presented at the workshop included identification of new traits to improve piglet survival including the evaluation of haemoglobin as a new on-farm measure and genetic aspects of carcase value. The latest findings from various projects funded by the Pork CRC were shown. These included an outline of the mechanisms of disease tolerance, an evaluation of environmental variation and a discussion about the economic importance of traits related to consistent, sustainable and efficient production of pork.2403 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings

BookPublication 60 Years German Basic Law: The German Constitution and its Court - Landmark Decisions of the Federal Constitutional Court of Germany in the Area of Fundamental RightsThe core principle of the German Basic Law - the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Germany since 1949 - is the Rule of Law or the broader concept of the 'Rechtsstaat'. The protection of fundamental rights is one important cornerstone of this principle. As the guardian of the Constitution, the Federal Constitutional Court has shaped these rights through interpretation by a large body of case law. Taking note of the growing interest among scholars not only in continental Europe but more so in the Common Law world, an extensive English translation of that jurisprudence is very timely.2661 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings

BookPublication The ABCs of learning disabilitiesThis [book] traces the history of the learning disabilities field and presents the standard gamut of topics subsumed in the history of the field. These include, but are not limited to, the origins of the learning disability field, the influential definitions of learning disabilities, the characteristics of individuals with learning disabilities, the condition of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and the etiology of learning disabilities. The [book] concludes with an assessment of the current hot topic of the response to instruction model as an alternative to the IQ-achievement discrepancy model of diagnosing learning disabilities and boldly raises the question of contributions of the research of response to instruction (RTI standard-protocol approach) to the learning disabilities field.1911 5 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
BookPublication Aboriginal Ways of Using EnglishThe majority of Australian Aboriginal people speak some kind of English. But often this is not quite the same as English spoken by other Australians. This book presents results of sociolinguistic research about Aboriginal ways of using English in non-remote Australia, by bringing together a number of my publications over a thirty-year period. The focus is on language and communication of Aboriginal people who speak English as their first and main language, and who do not speak a traditional language fluently.2374 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
BookPublication Aborigines & Activism: Race, Aborigines & the Coming of the Sixties to AustraliaIn a provocative reappraisal of the 1960s, 'Aborigines & Activism' recontextualises the history of Aboriginal activism within wider international movements. Concurrent to anti-war protests, women's movements, burgeoning civil rights activism in the United States and the struggles of South Africa's anti-apartheid freedom fighters, dramatic political changes took place in 'assimilated' Australia that challenged its status quo. From the early days of grassroots resistance through to Charles Perkins' 1965 Freedom Ride, the 1967 Referendum, Canberra's Tent Embassy and beyond, this is the story of the Great Southern Land's racial awakening - a time when Aborigines and their white supporters achieved paradigmatic shifts in the search for equality, justice and human dignity that still has powerful implications for 21st century Australia.1270 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
BookPublication Academia and Higher Learning in Popular CultureParticipation rates in higher education (learned institutes, colleges, and universities) are presently higher, globally, than at any time in the past. Today, in the United States, 40% of all 18–24-year-olds are enrolled in college (in 2020)" this fgure has held steady for the past decade or so, but is up from 24% in 1965 and 26% in 1970.1 In the United Kingdom, 64,090 degrees of all levels were awarded in 1970" this fgure rising to 761,215 by 2020.2 Almost 30% of Australians possess a Bachelor's degree or higher—compared with less than 8% three decades prior.3 With eliteonly education long consigned to the ash heap of history, 1970s-era predictions of a mass higher education system transitioning to a universal one have now come to pass,4 with governments worldwide committed to expanding participation still further as the twenty-frst century unfolds.5 These increases mean there are more universities, more students attending university, and greater public engagement with universities. The practice and experience of higher education sits heavily in popular awareness and the chapters of this collection chart and interpret the current high level of interest popular culture has in higher education.

BookPublication Academic Resilience: Personal Stories and Lessons Learnt from the COVID-19 Experience(Emerald Publishing Limited, 2022-03-22) ;Mahat, Marian ;Blannin, Joanne; Jay de Los Reyes, ElizerThe COVID-19 pandemic undoubtedly tested the resilience of academics in higher education. Many universities were severely affected by reduced student enrolment, with widespread job losses reported across universities. For many academics, the impact of the pandemic has been worrying, financially crippling and overwhelming.
The virus has also exposed academic inequalities and impacted heavily on vulnerable people. The individual and collective heroic spirit of many academics has been nothing short of extraordinary. Overcoming the initial hurdles of COVID-19 takes one kind of energy; the resilience needed to remain engaged despite the continuing changes and uncertainties is quite another challenge. It is one that demands sustained resilience.
This timely book provides perspectives across disciplines, career stages and global contexts on how to develop resilience in academia. These personal stories may empower others not only to survive, but to thrive in times of adversity.

BookPublication The Accessible HegelHegel is one of the greatest philosophers of all time – by some peoples' reckoning, he would rank first. Certainly his comprehensiveness of outlook and ability to draw diverse and opposing ideas and modes of experience together into a unified rational account of reality are unmatched. If you are at all like me, a first encounter with Hegel will be somewhat daunting, but you will also learn from it that something in his profound vision of things speaks to your inner self, and you can't let him go after that. The territory he explores – where human activities are shown to be exquisitely rich and full of surprises and deeper meanings – strikes one as strange, yet often oddly familiar. Hegel tells a story that is nothing less than the philosophical history of civilization and what he took to be its most significant accomplishments, in which each participant has had an identity and a role to play. Anyone can therefore profit enormously from reading it.To say that digesting Hegel's works requires special effort would be a classic understatement. When you begin reading, everything seems rather overwhelming; your head is swimming and it's hard to get your bearings or to feel sure that you have made any advance. You re-read, perhaps, but this helps only a little. Then, after a while, the task gets easier, as you persist and press on. Somewhere down the line, things start to fall into place, and you see the overall configuration of his system taking shape. Finally, the details also make sense, and you look back with much improved comprehension and confidence at the texts that had once left you so baffled. What I have described is not an unusual scenario when one attacks a demanding author in any field, and this should be remembered in order to counteract discouragement. My final piece of advice is this: Let Hegel's words wash over you, so to speak, in the justifiable expectation that you will understand much better in the end.1398 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings

BookPublication Achieving Biodiversity Protection in Megadiverse Countries: A Comparative Assessment of Australia and Brazil(Routledge, 2020); ;Dieguez Leuzinger, Marcia ;Teles da Silva, SolangeLeuzinger Coutinho, GabrielThis volume systematically analyses why legal doctrines for the protection of biodiversity are not sufficiently effective. It examples implementation in Australia and Brazil, two megadiverse countries with very differing legal and cultural traditions and natural environments. Substantial effort goes into the development and interpretation of legal doctrines for the protection of biodiversity in national and international law. Despite this, biodiversity continues in steep decline. Nowhere is this more evident than in megadiverse countries, such as Australia and Brazil, which possess the greatest number and diversity of animals and plants on Earth. The book covers a wide range of topics, including farming, mining, marine environments, indigenous interests and governance. Achieving Biodiversity Protection in Megadiverse Countries highlights specific causes of underperformance in protecting diverse terrestrial and marine environments. It provides proposals for more effective implementation in these two jurisdictions, relevant to other megadiverse territories, and for biodiversity protection generally. Each chapter was written by teams of Australian and Brazilian authors, so that similar issues are considered across both jurisdictions, to provide both country-specific and generalisable insights. Achieving Biodiversity Protection in Megadiverse Countries will be of great interest to students and scholars of environmental law and governance and biodiversity conservation, as well as policymakers, practitioners and NGOs working in these fields.2079 1 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
BookPublication Achieving sustainable production of eggs Volume 1: Safety and qualityThe quality of the egg encompasses its chemical composition, nutritional quality as a human food source, sensory qualities including appearance and special nutraceutical benefits for human health. Eggs contain all essential nutrients for human health except for dietary fibre and vitamin C. This volume also discusses handling, packaging and storage of eggs, conditions that affect the quality of the product that reaches the consumer. The microbiological safety of eggs is of paramount importance as eggs have been implicated in outbreaks of food-borne illness, mainly caused by Salmonella. Fortunately, by virtue of its role in nature, the egg possesses many anti-microbial properties, and these properties can be maintained and enhanced for the benefit of consumers. This volume, Achieving sustainable production of eggs Volume 1: Safety and quality, explores the wealth of research addressing these themes.2380 2 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings

This volume, 'Achieving sustainable production of eggs Volume 2: Animal welfare and sustainability', provides a detailed account of laying hens' nutritional requirements and a practical guide to maintaining their health. The welfare of hens is addressed by examining their welfare standards, identifying and discussing welfare issues affecting free-range laying hens, reviewing the welfare costs and benefits of beak trimming, and investigating the management of laying hen flocks with intact beaks. The sustainability of the egg industry is addressed from two perspectives: waste management in egg production and an assessment of the sustainability of organic egg production.2348 2 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
BookPublication Activities to Enhance Social, Emotional, and Problem-Solving Skills: Ninety Activities That Teach Children, Adolescents, and Adults Skills Crucial to Success in LifeThis third edition includes 14 new activities that teach a wide range of social, emotional, and problem-solving skills. The target skills for the new activities vary from delaying gratification to facilitating team success. We have also updated references and identified an additional valuable use of the activities - to assess specific skills in a fun activity. Our experiences in testing the new activities have confirmed our view that even highly functioning adults lack many of the skills taught by the activities. With 90 activities total, the third edition provides many choices for fun activities to teach important psychological skills. ... his book is for anyone who wants to help others improve social, emotional, or problem-solving skills: teachers, counselors, psychologists, occupational psychologists, parents, corporate trainers, and so on. The skills taught range from elementary, such as identifying emotions others are experiencing, to sophisticated, such as providing leadership and solving real problems. The activities teach skills of great value to children, teens, and adults. The activities can help the activity coordinator teach skills, assess skill level, and begin a conversation about specific skills, including the value of the skills and how to improve them. The activities have special value in that they include fun elements that are important to maintaining motivation by individuals learning the skills. Because the activity coordinator participates along with learners in the fun activities, the activities can help the coordinator establish and maintain a positive working relationship with the learners.2510 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
BookPublication Activities To Enhance Social, Emotional, And Problem-Solving Skills: Seventy-Six Activities That Teach Children, Adolescents, and Adults Skills Crucial to Success in LifeWe began work on the first edition of this book by searching other books, journal articles, the Internet, and the memories of colleagues. We based some of the activities on classic parlor activities such as charades. Some activities we made up whole, using creative processes that defy easy explanation. Once we had developed a number of activity ideas, we created a standard presentation format that includes suggestions about how to help participants transfer to their everyday lives the skills they learn engaging in the activities. For field testing the activities, we created a standard evaluation strategy that focused on the extent to which participants enjoyed the activity and the extent to which the activity produced the types of experiences that occur in sophisticated training or counseling. For example,John realized, as a result of engaging in some of the activities, that he could stand to improve his ability to take the perspective of others with whom he interacts and to understand their motivations and emotions. One night he played poor tennis, and a friend beat him for the first time ever. John felt unhappy and started to leave, saying little. Then he thought about engaging in the "Losing Well" activity with a group of children, and he called the other participant over to his car and praised him for his outstanding playing. The friend smiled-and then pointed out that John's tires were badly in need of air. He was right, and John saved the tires by adding air.John later thought that he now had a new anecdote to share with clients-and his children-about how using a good social style, specifically being a good loser, pays off, sometimes in surprising ways.2059 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
BookPublication Adaptable TV: Rewiring the TextThis book focuses on the significantly under-explored relationship between televisual culture and adaptation studies in what is now commonly regarded as the 'Golden Age' of contemporary TV drama. Adaptable TV: Rewiring the Text does not simply concentrate on traditional types of adaptation, such as reboots, remakes and sequels, but broadens the scope of enquiry to examine a diverse range of experimental adaptive types that are emerging within an ever-changing TV landscape. With a particular focus on the serial narrative form, and with case studies that include Penny Dreadful, Fargo, The Night Of and Orange is the New Black, this study is essential reading for anyone who is interested in the complex interplay between television studies and adaptation studies.2533 3 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings

BookPublication Adorno and the Modern Ethos of FreedomDelivering a concise and lucid account of Adorno's response to the modern question of freedom, Hearfield sets into critical relief six other modern philosophies of freedom from Kant, Hegel, Nietzchem Heideggerm Foucault and Habermas. The book presents a broad variety of perspectives concerning the question of freedom, and draws out the contrasting and superior merit of Adorno's response. Hearfield employs an interpretive framework that makes a distinction between a conceptual ratio (Kantm Hegel and Habermas) and an existential 'poiesis' (Nietzsche, Heidegger and Foucault). The book includes singular reconstructions of Adorno's immanent critiques of Kant, Hegel, Nietzsche and Heidegger, and demonstrates the theoretical instabilities peculiar to Foucault and Habermas. The book concludes by revealing the respective 'blind spots' in the conceptual ratio and existential 'poiesis' modes of thinking, which block our capacity for becoming free.1192 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings

BookPublication Advances in Forensic Human IdentificationThis advanced text examines several areas pertinent in today's society in the context of human identification. While some would think of forensic human identification as the physical identification of human remains or identification of offenders, the discussion here looks at a broader definition, to include several additional aspects, for example, online, sexual and biometric identities. Problems associated with investigative practice are discussed, including the developing use of the Internet as a distribution and communication medium for criminal activities, as well as miscarriages of justice resultant from flawed applications or interpretations of forensic evidence and the future of forensic science provision. Dialogue is undertaken from an international perspective, as criminal activity is rarely limited by geographical or procedural boundaries. Where appropriate, case studies are provided to illustrate the use of techniques and the associated problems described in the text. The book is divided into five parts: (I) Identifying the Unknown, (II) Identification from Soft and Hard Tissues, (III) Digital and Biometric Evidence, (IV) Legal Issues: An International Perspective and (V) Future Considerations and Conclusions.2280 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
BookPublication Advances in Minority Language Research in Nigeria: Volume 1(Rüdiger Köppe Verlag, 2012) ;Blench, RogerMcGill, StuartThis volume is a collection of articles based on papers which have presented at the monthly Jos Linguistics Circle, held in the city of Jos in central Nigeria, together with an overview chapter surveying current linguistics research and language development in Nigeria. The twelve articles are all written by specialists in Nigerian languages and treat a wide range of subjects. General linguistics topics include phonetics (Biu-Mandara labiocoronals, interdental approximants in Bauchi, and the 'explosive bilabial nasal' of Ninkyop), phonology (vowel length in C'Lela and word-initial gemination in Cicipu), morphosyntax (focus strategies in Rigwe, tense/aspect/manner marking in Ukaan, and verbal nouns in Jukun) , semantics (of gt-Ma'in noun classes), and discourse (information structure encoded by verbal morphology in Central Kambari). Other chapters have sociolinguistic and interdisciplinary themes, including archaeology, Tarok oral traditions, and the use of Arabic script in presentday Nigeria. The focus is on the minority languages of Nigeria: many of the languages discussed are severely underdescribed despite their fascinating properties, and this book will be a valuable resource for africanists and typologists alike.2004 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings

BookPublication African Frontiers: Insurgency, Governance and Peacebuilding in Postcolonial StatesNot by natural selection, but through human endeavors, Africa is a continent where states have collapsed (Zartman 1995), internecine wars have been fought (see Nhema and Zeleza 2008a; Zack-Williams, Frost and Thomson 2002; Kaplan 1994 ), inter-generational and inter-community/country relationships have broken, people's dignities and identities have, and are still being violated through politically motivated and culturally induced violence in peace and in wartimes (Turshen and Twagiramariya 1998; Meintjes et al. 2001 ). However, it has been people's individual and collective desires for peace and progress that have enabled them to endeavor to rebuild their lives, amid the depravity that surrounds them (Doyle and Sambanis 2006). In the processes of rebuilding their lives and communities, and depending on their collective or individual circumstances, people have had to give up some of their beliefs and practices that were a priori aiding them to politically and socially navigate the continent's perilous environment. Traditions have to be compromised, social and political systems modified for the assimilation of new thought processes, even if they run contrary to their long-held beliefs (Mudimbe 1994; Mudimbe 1988); and people's national identities have to be adjusted to give meaning to the concepts of westernization and modernization, and the corresponding geo-political processes that always accompany the international community's conflict management and post-conflict national reconstruction and recovery policies in Africa (Nhema and Zeleza 2008b ).2177 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
BookPublication Ageing in Asia and the Pacific in Changing Times: Implications for Sustainable DevelopmentThis book demonstrates that there are wide-ranging potential challenges in addressing issues associated with ageing populations in both developed and developing countries of the region. This book brings together local, national and regional perspectives on the ageing population and sustainable development nexus in selected countries in the Asia Pacific region.
The countries selected in this book include a mix of developed and developing economies that all reflect strong trade, investment and migration linkages. While the Asia Pacific region is forecast to enjoy high growth in the coming decade, a recurring common policy challenge is addressing the 'demographic time bomb' posed by ageing populations and workforces (Montague et al., 2017). Consequently, this book focuses on strategic policies and practices of multiple stakeholders, primarily: governments, industry and education systems, together with, the range of aged care services providers - in more effectively addressing these key socio-economic challenges associated with the ageing population for sustainable development.

BookPublication Agricultural R&D in the Developing World: Too Little, Too Late?(International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), 2006) ;Pardey, Philip G ;Alston, Julian MPiggott, Ronald RoyThe purpose of this volume is to document the changing institutions and investments in agricultural R&D in less-developed countries, in part to form a companion volume to Paying for Agricultural Productivity by providing a more complete global picture of the issues. A more important purpose is to take stock of what is happening in less-developed countries. This task is especially compelling if, as seems likely, these countries will have to become more self-reliant in developing crucial new agricultural technologies... The chapters document the history and current status of the national agricultural research systems (NARSs) in terms of policies, institutions, investments, and achievements. The case studies cover a geographically dispersed area (South Africa and China, for example) and diverse farming systems (such as Brazil vs. Korea), yet some common themes emerge... This book has been written primarily for those who make policy and allocate resources for agricultural research and extension, and the policy analysts and development specialists who advise them: specifically, strategic decision makers and their advisers in international agencies, national governments, and public or private agricultural research and extension organizations.1687 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
BookPublication Agroforestry for Natural Resource Management'It's a great time to be involved in the management of agricultural lands and forests in Australia.' If we wrote that sentence 100 years ago, we would have probably substituted the word 'management' with 'opening up' and 'exploitation'. We might have added that this was essential to secure Australia's place as one of the leading economies and nations of the modern world. While the focus of the task is very different, the scale and urgency of the many issues facing land management in Australia today has not diminished. As we continue to develop the economic productivity of our land we are confronted with the question of how to sustain this development. Agriculture and forestry both impact, and are impacted upon by, soil and water resources, native and feral plants and animals, and by atmosphere and climate. The people who manage the land are responsive to community perceptions of appropriate land management, either by legislative coercion or by gradual changes in their own environmental awareness. The agriculture and forestry sectors share much in their response to the future, and for those involved there is a great opportunity to contribute to the development of truly sustainable and economically viable rural landscapes that are uniquely Australian.1761 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings

BookPublication All the Abbé's Women: Power and Misogyny in Seventeenth-Century France, through the Writings of Abbé d'AubignacThe image of François Hédelin as a tightrope walker is an amusing one, given the abbé's reputation as a stern and inflexible dramatic theoretician in seventeenth-century France. Nevertheless, it is this comparison that accurately represents abbé d'Aubignac's philosophical attitude towards the female sex. What is striking about all of Hédelin's fictional output is that the principal focus of his work is women - women of high political and social standing. One may speculate that the composition of these works is, in part, a manifestation of the abbé's fantasies about women, however subtle and innocent these notions appear to be.2186 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings

BookPublication Aloysius Bertrand's 'Gaspard de la Nuit': Beyond the Prose Poem"The author is a captive of his epoch, of his own present. Subsequent times liberate him from this captivity, and literary scholarship is called upon to assist in this liberation". What was perhaps missing from this declaration by Mikhail Bakhtin in his 'Response to a Question from Novy Mir' is that an author can also be a captive of subsequent times - of his critical reception - and become a victim of the opinion of his/her posthumous readership. For a long time Aloysius Bertrand (1807-1841) has been treated as a minor poet and classed under the controversial label of petit romantique; his name has been deemed worth mentioning mainly because of his role as the author of the first collection of prose poetry in France. Bertrand himself seemed to have glimpsed this possible destiny of his work. ... This study of Bertrand's 'Gaspard de la Nuit' will attempt to show that the task of literary scholarship can sometimes be that of freeing an author from his/her canonical critical consideration by recovering the original context of the author's creation. In so doing, we may open up new interpretative possibilities.2548 3 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings

Publication Open AccessBookAmaranth (Amaranthus spp.): Weed management guide for Australian vegetable productionAmaranthus species are annual (or occasionally perennial) herbaceous plants, native to the Americas, that can grow up to 2 m in height. Here, we discuss A. viridis (green amaranth) and A. retroflexus (redroot amaranth).
There are approximately 60 Amaranthus species worldwide, of which 20 are found in Australia. Specific identification is best achieved based on differences in leaves, branches and flowers.
Green amaranth leaves are alternate, between 3-9 cm in length and 2-6 cm in width, oval to triangular in shape, smooth, and darker green on the top of the leaf. Flowers are brownish-yellow, about 1 mm in length and found at the end of plant stems. Seed is discshaped, shiny brown or black, and approximately 1 mm in length. Plants grow up to 2 m in height.
Redroot amaranth can also grow up to 2 m in height, and has a red-pink tap root. Leaves are alternate, oval to egg shaped and up to 10 cm in length, with more prominent veins than green amaranth. Flowers are numerous, greenish, and seed is oval to egg shaped, somewhat flattened, shiny black or dark brown, and approximately 1 mm in length.
Young plants can bear some resemblance to blackberry nightshade (Solanum nigrum) and fat hen (Chenopodium album), but with experience can be identified by their cotyledons and first true leaves.
