BookPublication The 1913 Rome Lectures: First International Training Course, by Maria Montessori(Montessori-Pierson Publishing Company, 2013); ;Quade, Larry ;Montessori, CarolinaVerheul, JokeIt is 2013 and the ideas of Maria Montessori on human development have spread far and wide around the world. The name is universally known in education circles and beyond, and there are countless schools that claim her name and method. Over a century of growth and expansion - with Montessori's philosophy resonating with many - millions of children have had the opportunity to be introduced to education via Montessori environments. Today Montessori is present in a vast number of countries, where it continues to grow exponentially and is increasingly being embraced as a tool for life - in order that our children may be better equipped to develop their potential. We saw a similar transformational movement one hundred years ago, when Maria Montessori was on the brink of major international success: with the English translation of her book The Montessori Method appearing the previous year, 1913 was to become the year in which the appeal of her innovative ideas would consolidate: she would give her first international teacher training course, and prepare for a promotional tour to the USA.3069 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
BookPublication 2012 AGBU Pig Genetics Workshop Notes(University of New England, Animal Genetics and Breeding Unit, 2012); Contains the edited conference papers presented at the Animal Genetics and Breeding Unit Pig Genetics (AGBU) Workshop, held at the University of New England, Armidale, Australia on the 24th and 25th of October, 2012. Following the tradition of previous workshops, research results relevant to animal breeding and pork production were discussed. Both Prof Hans Graser and Prof Chris Moran agreed to provide an overview of the application of quantitative and molecular genetics to livestock industries and beyond. Dr Andrew Swan outlined how genomic selection has been implemented in genetic evaluation systems used in the sheep and beef industries. Further topics presented at the workshop included identification of new traits to improve piglet survival including the evaluation of haemoglobin as a new on-farm measure and genetic aspects of carcase value. The latest findings from various projects funded by the Pork CRC were shown. These included an outline of the mechanisms of disease tolerance, an evaluation of environmental variation and a discussion about the economic importance of traits related to consistent, sustainable and efficient production of pork.2403 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
BookPublication 60 Years German Basic Law: The German Constitution and its Court - Landmark Decisions of the Federal Constitutional Court of Germany in the Area of Fundamental RightsThe core principle of the German Basic Law - the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Germany since 1949 - is the Rule of Law or the broader concept of the 'Rechtsstaat'. The protection of fundamental rights is one important cornerstone of this principle. As the guardian of the Constitution, the Federal Constitutional Court has shaped these rights through interpretation by a large body of case law. Taking note of the growing interest among scholars not only in continental Europe but more so in the Common Law world, an extensive English translation of that jurisprudence is very timely.2661 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings

BookPublication Academia and Higher Learning in Popular CultureParticipation rates in higher education (learned institutes, colleges, and universities) are presently higher, globally, than at any time in the past. Today, in the United States, 40% of all 18–24-year-olds are enrolled in college (in 2020)" this fgure has held steady for the past decade or so, but is up from 24% in 1965 and 26% in 1970.1 In the United Kingdom, 64,090 degrees of all levels were awarded in 1970" this fgure rising to 761,215 by 2020.2 Almost 30% of Australians possess a Bachelor's degree or higher—compared with less than 8% three decades prior.3 With eliteonly education long consigned to the ash heap of history, 1970s-era predictions of a mass higher education system transitioning to a universal one have now come to pass,4 with governments worldwide committed to expanding participation still further as the twenty-frst century unfolds.5 These increases mean there are more universities, more students attending university, and greater public engagement with universities. The practice and experience of higher education sits heavily in popular awareness and the chapters of this collection chart and interpret the current high level of interest popular culture has in higher education.

BookPublication Academic Resilience: Personal Stories and Lessons Learnt from the COVID-19 Experience(Emerald Publishing Limited, 2022-03-22) ;Mahat, Marian ;Blannin, Joanne; Jay de Los Reyes, ElizerThe COVID-19 pandemic undoubtedly tested the resilience of academics in higher education. Many universities were severely affected by reduced student enrolment, with widespread job losses reported across universities. For many academics, the impact of the pandemic has been worrying, financially crippling and overwhelming.
The virus has also exposed academic inequalities and impacted heavily on vulnerable people. The individual and collective heroic spirit of many academics has been nothing short of extraordinary. Overcoming the initial hurdles of COVID-19 takes one kind of energy; the resilience needed to remain engaged despite the continuing changes and uncertainties is quite another challenge. It is one that demands sustained resilience.
This timely book provides perspectives across disciplines, career stages and global contexts on how to develop resilience in academia. These personal stories may empower others not only to survive, but to thrive in times of adversity.

BookPublication Achieving Biodiversity Protection in Megadiverse Countries: A Comparative Assessment of Australia and Brazil(Routledge, 2020); ;Dieguez Leuzinger, Marcia ;Teles da Silva, SolangeLeuzinger Coutinho, GabrielThis volume systematically analyses why legal doctrines for the protection of biodiversity are not sufficiently effective. It examples implementation in Australia and Brazil, two megadiverse countries with very differing legal and cultural traditions and natural environments. Substantial effort goes into the development and interpretation of legal doctrines for the protection of biodiversity in national and international law. Despite this, biodiversity continues in steep decline. Nowhere is this more evident than in megadiverse countries, such as Australia and Brazil, which possess the greatest number and diversity of animals and plants on Earth. The book covers a wide range of topics, including farming, mining, marine environments, indigenous interests and governance. Achieving Biodiversity Protection in Megadiverse Countries highlights specific causes of underperformance in protecting diverse terrestrial and marine environments. It provides proposals for more effective implementation in these two jurisdictions, relevant to other megadiverse territories, and for biodiversity protection generally. Each chapter was written by teams of Australian and Brazilian authors, so that similar issues are considered across both jurisdictions, to provide both country-specific and generalisable insights. Achieving Biodiversity Protection in Megadiverse Countries will be of great interest to students and scholars of environmental law and governance and biodiversity conservation, as well as policymakers, practitioners and NGOs working in these fields.2079 1 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
BookPublication Achieving sustainable production of eggs Volume 1: Safety and qualityThe quality of the egg encompasses its chemical composition, nutritional quality as a human food source, sensory qualities including appearance and special nutraceutical benefits for human health. Eggs contain all essential nutrients for human health except for dietary fibre and vitamin C. This volume also discusses handling, packaging and storage of eggs, conditions that affect the quality of the product that reaches the consumer. The microbiological safety of eggs is of paramount importance as eggs have been implicated in outbreaks of food-borne illness, mainly caused by Salmonella. Fortunately, by virtue of its role in nature, the egg possesses many anti-microbial properties, and these properties can be maintained and enhanced for the benefit of consumers. This volume, Achieving sustainable production of eggs Volume 1: Safety and quality, explores the wealth of research addressing these themes.2380 2 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
BookPublication Achieving Sustainable Production of Eggs Volume 2: Animal Welfare and SustainabilityThe welfare of laying hens is dependent on the provision of appropriate housing, excellent management, high-quality feed, and prevention and appropriate treatment of diseases. This volume, 'Achieving sustainable production of eggs Volume 2: Animal welfare and sustainability', provides a detailed account of laying hens' nutritional requirements and a practical guide to maintaining their health. The welfare of hens is addressed by examining their welfare standards, identifying and discussing welfare issues affecting free-range laying hens, reviewing the welfare costs and benefits of beak trimming, and investigating the management of laying hen flocks with intact beaks. The sustainability of the egg industry is addressed from two perspectives: waste management in egg production and an assessment of the sustainability of organic egg production.2348 2 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
BookPublication Adaptation and Fitness in Animal Populations: Evolutionary and Breeding Perspectives on Genetic Resource Management(Springer, 2008); ; ;Frankham, RichardAt the 16th AAABG conference in 2005, a proposal was launched to organise a symposium to examine advances in understanding of "adaptive fitness, both in managed populations being conserved and domestic animal species being utilised for food and agriculture production". After discussion about the term "adaptive fitness" some of us decided we should organise a symposium "Adaptation and Fitness in Animal Populations - Evolutionary and breeding perspectives on genetic resource management" to be held at the 2007 AAABG meeting in Armidale.1836 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
BookPublication Advances in breeding of dairy cattleThis collection reviews the latest research on dairy cattle genetics and advanced methods of genetic evaluation and selection.
After an overview of genetic improvements achieved so far, Part 1 assesses the problem of inbreeding and genetic diversity in modern dairy cattle as well as opportunities for crossbreeding. BookPublication Advances in Forensic Human IdentificationThis advanced text examines several areas pertinent in today's society in the context of human identification. While some would think of forensic human identification as the physical identification of human remains or identification of offenders, the discussion here looks at a broader definition, to include several additional aspects, for example, online, sexual and biometric identities. Problems associated with investigative practice are discussed, including the developing use of the Internet as a distribution and communication medium for criminal activities, as well as miscarriages of justice resultant from flawed applications or interpretations of forensic evidence and the future of forensic science provision. Dialogue is undertaken from an international perspective, as criminal activity is rarely limited by geographical or procedural boundaries. Where appropriate, case studies are provided to illustrate the use of techniques and the associated problems described in the text. The book is divided into five parts: (I) Identifying the Unknown, (II) Identification from Soft and Hard Tissues, (III) Digital and Biometric Evidence, (IV) Legal Issues: An International Perspective and (V) Future Considerations and Conclusions.2280 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
BookPublication Advances in Minority Language Research in Nigeria: Volume 1(Rüdiger Köppe Verlag, 2012) ;Blench, RogerMcGill, StuartThis volume is a collection of articles based on papers which have presented at the monthly Jos Linguistics Circle, held in the city of Jos in central Nigeria, together with an overview chapter surveying current linguistics research and language development in Nigeria. The twelve articles are all written by specialists in Nigerian languages and treat a wide range of subjects. General linguistics topics include phonetics (Biu-Mandara labiocoronals, interdental approximants in Bauchi, and the 'explosive bilabial nasal' of Ninkyop), phonology (vowel length in C'Lela and word-initial gemination in Cicipu), morphosyntax (focus strategies in Rigwe, tense/aspect/manner marking in Ukaan, and verbal nouns in Jukun) , semantics (of gt-Ma'in noun classes), and discourse (information structure encoded by verbal morphology in Central Kambari). Other chapters have sociolinguistic and interdisciplinary themes, including archaeology, Tarok oral traditions, and the use of Arabic script in presentday Nigeria. The focus is on the minority languages of Nigeria: many of the languages discussed are severely underdescribed despite their fascinating properties, and this book will be a valuable resource for africanists and typologists alike.2004 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings

BookPublication African Frontiers: Insurgency, Governance and Peacebuilding in Postcolonial StatesNot by natural selection, but through human endeavors, Africa is a continent where states have collapsed (Zartman 1995), internecine wars have been fought (see Nhema and Zeleza 2008a; Zack-Williams, Frost and Thomson 2002; Kaplan 1994 ), inter-generational and inter-community/country relationships have broken, people's dignities and identities have, and are still being violated through politically motivated and culturally induced violence in peace and in wartimes (Turshen and Twagiramariya 1998; Meintjes et al. 2001 ). However, it has been people's individual and collective desires for peace and progress that have enabled them to endeavor to rebuild their lives, amid the depravity that surrounds them (Doyle and Sambanis 2006). In the processes of rebuilding their lives and communities, and depending on their collective or individual circumstances, people have had to give up some of their beliefs and practices that were a priori aiding them to politically and socially navigate the continent's perilous environment. Traditions have to be compromised, social and political systems modified for the assimilation of new thought processes, even if they run contrary to their long-held beliefs (Mudimbe 1994; Mudimbe 1988); and people's national identities have to be adjusted to give meaning to the concepts of westernization and modernization, and the corresponding geo-political processes that always accompany the international community's conflict management and post-conflict national reconstruction and recovery policies in Africa (Nhema and Zeleza 2008b ).2177 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
BookPublication Ageing in Asia and the Pacific in Changing Times: Implications for Sustainable DevelopmentThis book demonstrates that there are wide-ranging potential challenges in addressing issues associated with ageing populations in both developed and developing countries of the region. This book brings together local, national and regional perspectives on the ageing population and sustainable development nexus in selected countries in the Asia Pacific region.
The countries selected in this book include a mix of developed and developing economies that all reflect strong trade, investment and migration linkages. While the Asia Pacific region is forecast to enjoy high growth in the coming decade, a recurring common policy challenge is addressing the 'demographic time bomb' posed by ageing populations and workforces (Montague et al., 2017). Consequently, this book focuses on strategic policies and practices of multiple stakeholders, primarily: governments, industry and education systems, together with, the range of aged care services providers - in more effectively addressing these key socio-economic challenges associated with the ageing population for sustainable development.

BookPublication Agricultural R&D in the Developing World: Too Little, Too Late?(International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), 2006) ;Pardey, Philip G ;Alston, Julian MPiggott, Ronald RoyThe purpose of this volume is to document the changing institutions and investments in agricultural R&D in less-developed countries, in part to form a companion volume to Paying for Agricultural Productivity by providing a more complete global picture of the issues. A more important purpose is to take stock of what is happening in less-developed countries. This task is especially compelling if, as seems likely, these countries will have to become more self-reliant in developing crucial new agricultural technologies... The chapters document the history and current status of the national agricultural research systems (NARSs) in terms of policies, institutions, investments, and achievements. The case studies cover a geographically dispersed area (South Africa and China, for example) and diverse farming systems (such as Brazil vs. Korea), yet some common themes emerge... This book has been written primarily for those who make policy and allocate resources for agricultural research and extension, and the policy analysts and development specialists who advise them: specifically, strategic decision makers and their advisers in international agencies, national governments, and public or private agricultural research and extension organizations.1687 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
BookPublication Agroforestry for Natural Resource Management'It's a great time to be involved in the management of agricultural lands and forests in Australia.' If we wrote that sentence 100 years ago, we would have probably substituted the word 'management' with 'opening up' and 'exploitation'. We might have added that this was essential to secure Australia's place as one of the leading economies and nations of the modern world. While the focus of the task is very different, the scale and urgency of the many issues facing land management in Australia today has not diminished. As we continue to develop the economic productivity of our land we are confronted with the question of how to sustain this development. Agriculture and forestry both impact, and are impacted upon by, soil and water resources, native and feral plants and animals, and by atmosphere and climate. The people who manage the land are responsive to community perceptions of appropriate land management, either by legislative coercion or by gradual changes in their own environmental awareness. The agriculture and forestry sectors share much in their response to the future, and for those involved there is a great opportunity to contribute to the development of truly sustainable and economically viable rural landscapes that are uniquely Australian.1761 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings

BookPublication Amphibian Biology, Volume 11 - Status of Conservation and Decline of Amphibians: Eastern Hemisphere. Part 3 - Western EuropeInfectious diseases (IDs) are a de rigueur issue in amphibian conservation biology. The precipitous declines of Neotropical, Australian, and Californian amphibians due to chytridiomycosis (Berger et a1. 1998; Lips et al. 2006, 2008; Vredenburg et al. 2010; Cheng et al. 2011) undoubtedly launched amphibian parasites onto the global stage, aided by a cast of viral, platyhelminth, protist, and other fungal infectious agents (Cunningham et a1. 1996; Johnson et a1. 1999; Green et al. 2002; Brunner et al. 2004; Raffel et al. 2008; Rohr et al. 2008b; Teacher et al. 2010). As a result, amphibian ID research has increased dramatically, with few tangible outputs relevant for applied conservation (Woodhams et al. 2011; but see Johnson et al. 2007), perhaps unsurprisingly, as characterizing the dynamics of disease and controlling IDs are thorny issues. When warranted, mitigating the effects of amphibian IDs will arguably be more complicated than in other terrestrial vertebrate hosts, due to cryptic hosts with complex life histories, large population sizes of hosts, and generalist parasites affecting speciose host communities (Lips et al. 2006, 2008; Johnson et al. 2008; Woodhams et al. 2011; Garner et al. 2012). Nevertheless, amphibians are declining at an alarming rate (Houlahan et al. 2000; McCallum 2007) and amphibian parasites are contributing factors in many of these declines (Skerratt et al. 2007; Crawford et al. 2010). We are obliged to respond to this threat, as human activities are factors in many novel amphibian host/parasite dynamics (Forson and Storfer 2006; Bosch et al. 2007; Fisher and Garner 2007; Picco and Collins 2008; Rohr et al. 2008b; St. Amour et al. 2008; Walker et al. 2008; Schloegel et al. 2009).2120 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
BookPublication Aromas of Asia: exchanges, histories, threatsA uniquely powerful marker of ethnic, gender, and class identities, scent can also overwhelm previously constructed boundaries and transform social-sensory realities within contexts of environmental degradation, pathogen outbreaks, and racial politics. This innovative multidisciplinary volume critically examines olfaction in Asian societies with the goal of unlocking its full potential as an analytical frame and lived phenomenon.
Featuring contributions from international scholars with deep knowledge of the region, this volume conceptualizes Asia and its borders as a dynamic, transnationally connected space of olfactory exchange. Using examples such as trade along the Silk Road" the diffusion of dharmic religious traditions out of South Asia" the waves of invasion, colonization, and forced relocation that shaped the history of the continent" and other "sensory highways" of contact, the contributors break down essentializing olfactory tropes and reveal how scent functions as a category of social and moral boundary-marking and boundary-breaching within, between, and beyond Asian societies. Smell shapes individual, collective, and state-based memory, as well as discourses about heritage and power. As such, it suggests a pervasive and powerful intimacy that contributes to our understanding of the human condition, mobility, and interconnection.

Publication Open AccessBookThe Art of Neighbouring: Making Relations Across China's BordersOver the past decades, living in proximity to an increasingly powerful China has gained new meanings.'Rising China'-the nation, the notion, and the buzzword-sparks dreams and triggers fears. Borders that were closed during the Cold War era have again become zones of contact and exchange. Old trade routes are revived, new economic corridors established, and remote border towns turned into special zones. Tales of entrepreneurial success spread wide and stimulate hopes for trans-regional development. At the same time, security concerns remain high, territorial disputes still loom large, and minorities from northern Burma to Tibet, Xinjiang and Tajikistan continue to seek autonomy. In this context, engaging in multiple neighbouring relations has become a necessity for those living in these zones of contact and exchange. The experiences and realities of relation-making across China's borders shape life in profound and lasting ways. However, these experiences and realities of everyday neighbouring receive less analytic attention than they deserve.2292 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings

BookPublication At the Edge of the RiftThis volume represents the fourth instalment in an ongoing series that captures the work done through the Experiential Learning in Virtual Worlds conferences (ELVW). We sit at a paradoxically quiet but exciting time. Virtual worlds are in a depression in terms of their adoption and their use. Indeed, even the term 'virtual world' has dropped off of Gartner's radar in their most recent iteration of the technology hype cycle, replaced by the term 'virtual reality.' At the same time, we are sitting on the edge of significant developments: Oculus Rift having been acquired by Facebook; Utherverse able to host thousands of avatars while streaming media; ReactionGrid and the use of game engines in educational development, to mention just a few.2350 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings

BookPublication The Balance of Nature and Human ImpactIt is clear that nature is undergoing rapid changes as a result of human activities such as industry, agriculture, travel, fisheries and urbanization. What effects do these activities have? Are they disturbing equilibria in ecological populations and communities, thus upsetting the balance of nature, or are they enhancing naturally occurring disequilibria, perhaps with even worse consequences? It is often argued that large-scale fluctuations in climate and sea levels have occurred over and over again in the geological past, long before human activities could possibly have had any impact, and that human effects are very small compared to those that occur naturally. Should we conclude that human activity cannot significantly affect the environment, or are these naturally occurring fluctuations actually being dangerously enhanced by humans? This book examines these questions, first by providing evidence for equilibrium and nonequilibrium conditions in relatively undisturbed ecosystems, and second by examining human-induced effects.2142 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
BookPublication Basileia: Essays on Imperium and Culture in Honour of E.M. and M.J. Jeffreys(Australian Association for Byzantine Studies, 2011) ;Nathan, GeoffreyGarland, LyndaThe collection of studies published here began as a series of papers delivered at the Fifteenth Biennial Conference of the Australian Association for Byzantine Studies, held at the University of New South Wales in Sydney in February of 2008. The conference, held in honour of the eminent Byzantinists Elizabeth and Michael Jeffreys, took as its theme "Imperium and Culture", which also serves as the main subject of this volume. Elizabeth is Emeritus Bywater and Sotheby Professor of Byzantine and Modern Greek Language and Literature in the Faculty of Medieval and Modern languages, and an Emeritus Fellow of Exeter College. She is also an Honorary Fellow of St Anne's College and a Fellow of the Australian Academy of the Humanities. Michael still serves as quondam Sir Nicholas Laurentius Professor of Modern Greek at the University of Sydney and is a Researcher at the Oxford Centre for Late Antiquity. The Jeffreys' reputation internationally and their long and warm association with Australian Byzantine Studies has resulted in the addition of contributions not originally included in the conference. The result, among other things, is to reinforce not only the quality of the essays here, but also to indicate a measure of our admiration and respect. Accordingly, both the authors and the editors collectively seek to honour Elizabeth and Michael for contributions to the field of Byzantine Studies spanning close to forty years, as well as their especial attachment to Australia. This volume touches upon an enduring topic in modern postclassical historiography. The ways in which politics and culture intertwined in the Byzantine world has been a key and continually evolving area of research amongst historians, archaeologists, philologists and art and architectural historians. Interest not only in the academic world, but also recently among the general public - with major exhibitions at European and American museums - has served to encourage deeper exploration of the interplay between political power and various forms of cultural expression.1678 2 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings

BookPublication Beveridge and voluntary action in Britain and the wider British worldWilliam Beveridge's report 'Voluntary action: a report on methods of social advance' was published in October 1948. ... In assessing the impact of Beveridge's 'Voluntary action' over the last sixty years, this book also provides a reminder that the terms 'voluntary action' and 'voluntary sector' are both fluid and contestable. In this book we use Beveridge's own definition of voluntary action as outlined in his 1948 report, as encompassing mutual aid, self-help and philanthropy. ... As the individual chapters demonstrate, the ideas that William Beveridge developed in his 'Voluntary action' in the late 1940s have regained currency in recent times. What he had to say then has proved to be still relevant to us today, in an era which has seen increased co-operation and formal partnerships or 'compacts', but also widely expressed concerns about the basis of relations between third-sector organisations and the state.2424 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings

BookPublication Big Data in Education: Pedagogy and ResearchThis book discusses how Big Data could be implemented in educational settings and research, using empirical data and suggesting both best practices and areas in which to invest future research and development. It also explores: 1) the use of learning analytics to improve learning and teaching; 2) the opportunities and challenges of learning analytics in education.
As Big Data becomes a common part of the fabric of our world, education and research are challenged to use this data to improve educational and research systems, and also are tasked with teaching coming generations to deal with Big Data both effectively and ethically.
The Big Data era is changing the data landscape for statistical analysis, the ways in which data is captured and presented, and the necessary level of statistical literacy to analyse and interpret data for future decision making. The advent of Big Data accentuates the need to enable citizens to develop statistical skills, thinking and reasoning needed for representing, integrating and exploring complex information.
This book offers guidance to researchers who are seeking suitable topics to explore. It presents research into the skills needed by data practitioners (data analysts, data managers, statisticians, and data consumers, academics), and provides insights into the statistical skills, thinking and reasoning needed by educators and researchers in the future to work with Big Data. This book serves as a concise reference for policymakers, who must make critical decisions regarding funding and applications.

BookPublication Biosecurity: A Systems Perspective(CRC Press, 2024-07-03); ;Bland, Lucie M ;Arndt, Edith ;Bau, Sana ;Camac, James S ;Mannix, Evelyn ;Trouvé, RaphaëlRobinson, Andrew PBiosecurity: A Systems Perspective provides an overview of biosecurity as a system of related components, actors, and risks. This book—directed to the biosecurity practitioner, generalist scientist, and student—introduces overall features of the biosecurity system while walking the reader through the most up-to-date research on each step of the continuum (i.e. pre-border, border, and post-border activities). This book, which explicitly incorporates economic and social dimensions as well as varied decision-making contexts, paves the way for a more systemic approach to biosecurity risk management. The work spans statistics, ecology, mathematics, economics, veterinary science, human medicine, and sociology, involving collaborators across government, academia, and the private sector.
The content and language are accessible to a wide range of audiences, including generalist scientists, biosecurity practitioners, and graduate students. More complex content is introduced in standalone boxes or chapters.
The book follows a clear, simple structure within and among chapters (i.e. following the structure of the biosecurity system), making it a preferred option for graduate students.
This book introduces novel cross-cutting themes, such as the importance of economic efficiency and institutional and social factors, going beyond the traditional science-based approach to biosecurity.
Written in partnership with government agency practitioners, this book uses on-the-ground case studies to demonstrate how biosecurity principles are applied in practice.
The book addresses challenges common to regulators in general, namely efficient regulation in uncertain and rapidly changing environments with multiple stakeholders who have—at times—conflicting priorities.
