Environmental education and the whole school approach in one Australian primary school

Abstract

It is thought that whole school approaches to environmental education, where sustainability principles and processes are embedded into curriculum, grounds and resource management are a way of enacting cultural change towards more sustainable societies. Despite official encouragement in Australia, only some schools are reported to have adopted a whole school approach. This paper reports on the plans adopted by teachers in one school, providing an overview of the thinking and processes they put into practice over a period of four years, to implement co-ordinated whole school environmental education.
