dc.description.abstract | Current concern about children and the Internet focuses on the dangersposed by identity manipulation online — adults who pretend to be children in order to befriend and later exploit those children. This concern deflects our attention from the manner in which children use the Internet to explore their identity. We need to give properconsideration to the possible harm that may be done to children through denying them the opportunity to play with their identities online, while also considering the manner in which such play can reinforce stereotypes and world views which may also do harm. Legal regulation of the Internet may have to strike this balance to be truly protective of children's interests. | en |
