English Abstract: This extensive article is part of a large, multi-volume research project on human and fundamental rights in Europe edited, inter alia, by the former President of the German Constitutional Court. This article deals with the the rights concepts of human dignity, personal freedom and free movement in the European Convention of Human Rights. Whereas the term human dignity does not exist in the European Convention, dignity has played an important role underpinning various rights in the Convention. The other two rights are specific guarantees in the Convention. The article analyses the jurisprudence of the European Court of Human Rights, the relevant literature and other materials for a critical assessment of the law.
