dc.description.abstract
This final chapter explores the situation of public administration and effective governance in South Asia through the lens of Sustainable Development Goal 16 (SDG 16). As the 2030 Agenda’s halfway point approaches, progress on SDG 16 and other targets has stalled amid escalating conflicts, inequality, and democratic backsliding. The South Asian region, home to nearly a quarter of humanity, exemplifies these problems, emphasizing the critical role of SDG 16 in advancing the overall 2030 Agenda. Building on the knowledge presented in the book’s chapters, this concluding chapter offers a conceptual model that highlights the integrative function of SDG 16. Establishing important prerequisites such as political stability and effective governance, SDG-ready public service, women’s empowerment, inclusive engagement, and technological upscaling allows for the efficient implementation of SDG 16. This, in turn, has a positive impact on other SDGs by improving governance, the rule of law, and civic engagement. Progress on the 2030 Agenda reinforces these essential pillars, creating a virtuous cycle. As a governance compass, SDG 16 offers a unifying paradigm for mobilizing all stakeholders around the broader aim of sustainable and inclusive development for people and the planet.
en
