With high mountains, green meadows arid clear lakes, it is a place of great natural beauty and a popular destination for tourists. Swat was a princely state until it was dissolved in 1969. Miangul Abul Haq Jahanzaib had been the Wali-e-Swat (Head of the State or Prince of Swat) since 12 December 1949 till the state came under the jurisdiction of the government of Pakistan on 24July, 1969. The people of Swat are mainly Pashtuns, Kohistanis and Gujars.
