Data was collected via participant observation, using structured formal interviews, unstructured informal interviews, group discussions and workshops, informal conversations and personal communication. The author also collected secondary data such as meeting notes and resources, records, reports and documents pertaining to UN activities in the field. Data was also gathered from nearly two decades of field experience in over 30 different post-conflict countries involving the United Nations system, including peacekeeping operations and UN Environment. This includes a series of policy reports on natural resources, conflict, and peacebuilding that were issued by a combination of ten UN agencies, newspapers, magazines, government department websites, and conversations with UN staff on the ground.en
