dc.description.abstract
This chapter examines the impact of European Huns on military history. The Huns arrived in the Volga-Don region ca. 360, bringing with them Inner Asian traditions of warfare and imperial statecraft. During the reign of Attila, Hunnic rule stretched from the Rhine to the Dnieper. The Huns' mounted archery ended centuries of infantry dominance in warfare in the Mediterranean world, leading to the age of the hippotoxotai during the sixth century. With other barbarian peoples, the Huns share responsibility for the collapse of Roman rule in the West.
en
