Abstract: The properties of amides are determinants of the structure and characteristics of a wide range of molecules and particularly those of peptides and proteins. Hydroxamic esters, as a subset of the amide functionality, possess many structural features in common with the more abundant linkage. Amide linkages in hydroxamic esters and amides are characterized by a nitrogen that is essentially sp² hybridized and a lone pair that resides in a 2pz orbital.
