Brown, Sir Samuel Harold (1903-1965), lawyer, was born on 28 December 1903 at 16 Norfolk Square, London, the son of Harold George Brown (1876-1949), a solicitor, and his wife, Dorothy, née Beale, who was through her mother descended from the family of Oliver Cromwell. Brown was born into a family of impeccable legal tradition. His great-grandfather Joseph Brown QC was a member of Middle Temple, and his grandfather Harold Brown (1844-1910) was a solicitor and formed a partnership with James Linklater, William Hackwood, and Joseph Addison, becoming joint senior partner in 1895. His son Harold George Brown (Samuel Harold Brown's father) was made a junior partner in the firm in 1902 and established a reputation for himself in company law matters. Harold Brown was appointed senior partner in July 1933 but retired the following October, though he continued his interest in corporate matters by serving as a member of the boards of the BBC and the British Overseas Airways Corporation.en
