This multi-site experiment evaluated the effects of pre-competition positive imagery and self-instructions on serving accuracy in a tennis serving competition. One hundred and fifteen adult tennis players were randomly assigned to one of three conditions: positive imagery about serving, self-instructions relating to serving, or a serve-as-usual control condition. Participants in both the imagery and the self-instructions conditions served significantly more accurately than those in the control condition. The two experimental conditions had in common that each focused the thoughts of the server on how to complete the serve.en
