local.abstract.english | On March 31, 1492, Queen Isabella of Castile and King Ferdinand of Aragon ordered all the Jews in their kingdoms to convert to Christianity or to go into exile before July 31 of that year. For many Spanish Jews, the neighboring kingdom of Portugal provided a temporary refuge. Jewish and Spanish chroniclers tell us that in a few months more than one hundred thousand Jews crossed the border and entered Portugal. The king of Portugal, João II, allowed "600 families" to remain in his kingdom but demanded that the rest of the refugees leave Portugal within eight months. Those who would not submit to this order would be enslaved. However, for many Spanish Jews who settled in Portugal the respite was only very brief. In fact, five years later, João II's successor, Manuel I, forced almost the entire Jewish population of his kingdom to convert to Christianity. | en |
