This translation is part of a special issue of Babel, titled: 2018 National French Conference Special Issue. The original piece was written in French by Michel Boiron.en
In his keynote presentation at the conference of the National Association of French Teachers of Australia in 2018, Michel Boiron discussed the importance of motivation to learn, and learning to motivate learners to study an additional language. The paper presented here is developed from the text of that presentation. The importance of motivation in language learning is considered from perspectives of the difference of French (or any language) as a school or community subject, and using theories of motivation, including those of Maslow and Delannoy, to develop a set of practical principles for encouraging students to learn.
