English Abstract: Following the example of Alexander the Great, the Hellenistic rulers fought many wars by land and sea on a grand scale. Not only was the size of armies constantly increasing, due to the ongoing competition there was a process of permanent innovation on the technical level of warfare. New troop branches were created as well as new machines and weapons developed. Yet, at the end, these highly upgraded royal armies found their master in the Legions of the rising Roman empire.
