This paper analyses the 'flower guide' genre of theatre literature popular in late Qing dynasty Beijing (c. 1790-1911). The defining features of the genre and its sub-genres are identified, as well as the development of the genre over time. In discussing the genre’s evolution, an argument is developed linking the genre to literati fashion and new forms of public culture that accompanied the development of Beijing opera.en
