Abstract: In this paper, we examine one type of complex predicate which we call the coverb construction. This construction is of interest because it raises questions for theories of basic linguistic categories, such as "verb", "compound", and "phrase". For present purposes, we adopt Butt's (2003) definition of a complex predicate. A complex predicate involves (a) two (or more) predicational elements, (b) which jointly predicate and (c) occur within a monoclausal structure (i.e., there is a single subject).
