Abstract: It is usually forgotten that the wartime experiences of the Australian Imperial Force (AIF) really began with the troopship voyage which took it halfway round the world. The AIF was unique in the sheer volume of trench and troopship literature it generated and in this article David Kent draws together these two previously neglected aspects of Australian military history.
