Abstract: The main aim of this literature review is to indicate some of the more recent advances that have occurred in the areas of rumen metabolism and renal physiology. A comprehensive review of the vast quantities of literature on these fields is impossible within the space constraints of this thesis. Consequently only those areas of study in which considerable advances have been made in recent years and of some relevance to this thesis have been detailed.
