Abstract: Winifred Ann Trindade recently retired as an Associate Professor in the History Department of the University of Melbourne, where she lectured in mediaeval history. She holds a distinctive place in the world of folkloric studies in this country, by reason of her pioneering work and teaching at Monash University in the 1960s and 1970s, but the story behind both of these activities must be unfolded by stages.
